I don’t think it’s a secret that going in to save someone drowning is one of the most dangerous things you can do.

I knew a guy who died doing that years ago.

On the same beach today, someone saw a mother and baby drowning. Man jumps in to save them. The toddler is fine. The woman made it to the shore where she got rushed to the hospital and died. And the man got swept out to see and is missing.

What are you supposed to do if there isn’t a lifeguard nearby or anything?

Either watch a woman and baby drown and live with that for the rest of your life. Or do something

But now he’s probably dead from that.

I would try to help and maybe drown. I’m not going to sit by and do nothing.

I would jump into a lake or a pool to save a stranger in an instant.

The ocean? I would leap in after a loved one because I could not live with the guilt of they died.

The ocean + a stranger? Nope. I don’t understand currents and undertow well enough to risk my life.

Wait until they lose consciousness so they can’t fight you then jump in.

Also I’m so sick of these f’n amazon scam pop ups.

Crazy, how far does one get swept out to be swept out to see? What does one exactly see when they're swept?

too soon?

Swimming out is a last resort, even for trained lifeguards. They taught us techniques to deal with panicked swimmers. Fortunately I never had to use them IRL.

My phone defeats them...at first it bragged about it.
I told it to just serve in silence. Now it just does it.

Android.

Soon drones will be standard on most beaches for these types of situations to drop life preservers.

It's dangerous for uneducated people, which is 99% of people.

Spot dangerous behavior beforehand.

I'd always help, but I'm trained to do so.

In rescue training, at least in our unit, we were taught to knock a mother fricker out if they’re flailing uncontrollably and are going to take you down with them.

Much easier to swim an unconscious, floating body back to shore than some flailing idiot

Swimming out by yourself unless you’re in great shape and trained is useless. Only option likely to succeed is to take a floatation item to them and stay back.
