Dang some of y’all had it rough.
I don’t talk to my brothers regularly and we aren’t best buds, but I see them a few times a year every year. Go fishing, or do Christmas at one of their houses.
I couldn’t imagine just walking away from that.

That's just immediate family on my side, I haven't even gotten into my wife's side.
Wife's grandfather was a minister and professor. Left his wife and 9 kids for a student, they are still married but 9 siblings had no contact with one another until recently a few have started talking again. They have it all, blue hair lesbian grandchildren, divorces out the arse, gay uncles, liberal hissy fits mostly triggered by me.
A family member tried to fight me over travel ball. 9u travel ball.
My mother in law didn't speak to us for 2 years after I charged her to do some repairs at her house because she was charging us to babysit her first grandchild.
I can go all day!
My wife and I are lucky we made it out alive we've been through the ringer

Even if they don't do drugs, get drunk, or steal, younger people have more of a "Know it all" demeanor just like we did. The problem is it takes them longer to realize they know nothing until they hit the "Real word". The constant arguing would get old quickly. Am I doing this right?
Seriously enabling is the easy route. It's hard to cut someone off.

Im not rich by any means, but far more successful than all of the deadbeats in my entire extended family. They live chaotic lives, riddled with drug use, alcoholism, bouncing around between shitty rental trailers, fail to hold a job for any length of time, just a total lack of ambition and self respect.
Over the years, they have asked me to pay bills, rent, etc. My wife hated it and felt like they were using me while at the same time making comments in attempts to make me feel guilty that I had more than they. I was blind to it until I had kids of my own. I refuse to allow my kids to be around this type of lifestyle and think it is acceptable (in short bursts, it can look fun and exciting). I have broken the cycle of poverty and white trash behavior and will not apologize for not looking back, especially for the sake of my kids.

Interesting thread.
I should have cut off all communications with my dad several years ago for many many reasons, but I put up with his crap to make it easy for my mom.
Now they are in poor health and need me around so there is no walking away.
Had a step sister who realized at a young age that she didn’t want to deal with the crazy from any of our family and she took off for Alaska and never looked back. She was the smart one. LOL

My father, very well educated, high IQ, absolutely destroyed his large family to hide all of his devious acts from our mom.
the family is somewhat still split in half. I'm on the DARK side, as he so titled us.
the dark side has tons of evidence on paper. two sisters tried to show our mom, but she didn't want to see the papers.
she made the choice, to throw away half her siblings, mostly of clever brainwashing by said father.
the light side, the other siblings, dare not speak or mingle with the dark side, least they join us by declaration.
this has lasted 40 years. some progress has most of both sides meeting. my sister who was #1 dark side built a wall that Trump would be proud of. don't blame her at all. she was persecuted.
Jesus said you must forgive 7x77, but wow you have to have the heart of Jesus to practice that type of forgiveness.
btw: my dad was described perfectly in a medical dictionary as a: socialpath.

If you had any first hand experience then you wouldn't be asking the question. It's a tragic rollercoaster that often leads to abuse whether it be verbal, physical, or drug related (or some combination of the three).

That sucks bro, but really not shite you can do in that situation. Of course she's a woke lefty that thinks everyone's raciseximisogy-blahblah yet will take their money and hospitality.

Sounds identical to one side of my extended family. Two uncles and and aunt who were major frick ups. When I was younger I would send them checks sometimes to help, but as I grew up I wised up. Two of them lived with my grandmother into their 40’s and mooched off her social security and a small pension that was coming in.
After she died I never had any contact with any of them as seniors again nor visited the city they all lived in.
Last I heard one uncle had been arrested for the fourth time for DWI.

I cut off a cousin after years of dealing with his stupid shite. His mom always asks me how come I don't talk to him anymore. She knows he's an a-hole and a loser, but it seems like she just wants me to say it for validation or something.
