I used to room with this guy in college, I'll call him Skipper, who used to lie his arse off. He would retell a story of an event that I was involved in and totally lie about what went on, he would glance over to me and give me this "don't ruin this for me" look.

I would just roll with it, but I could not believe the BS he would spew. I basically chalked it up to being a "gap" child. He was born much after his siblings and I guess he just needed to get attention some how.

It was harmless and I never dropped dime on him.

I had a coworker who lied nonstop about almost everything. 5'2" fat white guy who claimed to have been a 5 star recruit who played wide receiver for Florida, said he was from the Bronx and was friends with Biggie Smalls (he was from Dothan), just outrageous shite. It pissed me off at first but after I just started listening for entertainment, he became one of my favorite coworkers ever.

Happens all of the time offshore. A 20 year old who was a supervisor, driller, toolpusher, and salesman only to end up as a floor hand on a casing crew? We did the math....if he did everything that he said he would have had his first oilfield job at 3.

Yeah, I know a guy who will lie to you when you know he knows you know the truth. Also very unreliable. Constantly doesn't show up when he is supposed to be somewhere. Seems to have lots of friends. Can't understand why they put up with that shite.

There are plenty of people like this and I have no clue as to why they do it

There's a guy who used to work for me that if you added up all his "previous jobs" he would be 100 years old

lost one of my lifelong friends to this.

she lies about everything. on facebook she has done a complete rewrite of her past. giving herself a bachelors degree from the school she failed out of years ago and a masters degree from a school she never even attended. those non truths are some of the least galling delusions but you get an idea.

everyone knows its make believe, except for her it seems. i think she has convinced herself she can pass this stuff off or worse she has mentally convinced herself its actually true. she has no shame and cuts out anyone who calls her out. its sad to watch.

There is a character in Dilbert who does that. His name is Topper. No matter what someone says, he comes back with, "That's nothing, I ..."

Damn shame. I don't think people realize how destructive secrets can be.
It starts off with little things but before you know it, you realize you can't trust the person. I always thought I could tell when people are lying but I realized I can't.
It makes you wonder if people are using the basic lies "I ate at Cane's yesterday" to test their skills so they can throw a huge lie at you later.
I'm still confused about an old friend's potential lies. I'll never know what was real and what wasn't.

Same here and it's always about ridiculously stupid shite you'd have to be a moron to believe. He once told me he could control the Google satellite (I don't even know if Google has a satellite) with software he was given by a friend and that the FBI came after him but let him keep the software b/c he promised Google he wouldn't use it for illegal activities or to spy on people. I literally laughed in his face. He doesn't tell me shite anymore, but I hear him talking to other co-workers about the 6 models who live with him, or how he won the Powerball but decided to donate all of it to some Ukrainian orphanage. I mean his shite gets detailed. I'm convinced he's fricking retarded or something.

My oldest kid is like this. Has an excuse for everything, and you can't believe a word that comes out his mouth. He just doesn't get that if he simply told the teuth, people would be more than happy to help him out of any jam he gets into. I don't know how he still thinks people actually buy into his BS.

White lies don't hurt people. Cheating on others or physical harm do. Saying "I ate at cane's yesterday" when the person did not is nothing. If you got in a fight with this person and they lied about eating at cane's, maybe they are trying to cool off and avoid a confrontation with you. You probably should have let the person cool off and there would been a solid explanation for the lie. White lies are bullshite and mean absolutely nothing.

I know this sounds crazy, and I may take some heat for noticing this, but I am going to say it anyway. I have known about four to five serial liars in my life. I am a construction worker and I work a lot of 6-12's a week shutdowns at nuclear plants. When you work with someone 72 hours a week, they become like family, you learn a lot about them. Every single one of these serial liars I ever met never took a leak in the urinal. They always went into the bathroom stall to take a leak. We frequently make three hour jumps into contaminated areas at the nuclear plants. Everybody goes in as a team. Last stop before entering the dress out area is the restroom. The first stop once you clear the personal contamination monitors is the restroom. I don't have any reason why people habitually lie, but that is a consistent trait that I have noticed about ALL of them.
