Valid point. I'm well known for trying to avoid confrontation, until eventually it just bubbles over and I end up making a huge deal out of something small and stupid.

White lies are bull shite and mean absolutely nothing.

I think I'm understanding this more and more. From the replies on this thread, seems like everyone knows someone who exaggerates or makes up little lies. And I've even caught myself doing it, but only to people who don't matter to me.
So it makes me question, if people do it to me, does that mean I don't matter? #pelfan8104livesmatter

Interesting theory. Guy I knew who promised free tickets to people constantly worried about getting older and losing friends. So probably a way to hold on to the past.
I've read a lot about how birth order plays into a person's personality. Fascinating stuff.
I always try to apply those theories to people and see if it plays out with the people I know.

I'm sure you mattered to whatever individual you may be talking about when creating this thread. But you or me or whoever can over think things a majority of the time throughout our lives.

Just take it day by day. If he/she white lies to you then do it back. Annoy them the way it does you. As long as they don't cheat or physically harm you, then who gives a shite.

Are you going to explain what you meant by an old friend lies and not knowimg what was and wasn't real?

I've always been big on honesty, and I've just always thought if people lie about one thing, then they are lying about more and more.
So a couple of white lies, and I'm good to laugh it off, but when they become a pattern, I just start thinking that every single thing the person tells me must be a lie.
So eventually the tiniest lie can lead to things falling apart.
Even though that particular lie doesn't mean anything at all. (And the others didn't either, in retrospect.)
But I think it is normal to wonder, if there were lies that would have mattered that were just never found out.

quote:

If he/she white lies to you then do it back

Entertaining, but makes me wonder if they

quote:

cheat

I think that's the main issue. If they lie about where they are, it's a red flag for cheating. And I know it 99.999999% probably isn't cheating. It's probably more of a communication issue in these situations.

There is a character in Dilbert who does that. His name is Topper. No matter what someone says, he comes back with, "That's nothing, I ..."

I never read Dilbert, but the guy I am referring to must be just like that character. Hunting stories are the best. This guy has family who owns a bunch of hunting land in Texas so anytime someone tells a hunting story he is like "that aint nothing, my uncle in Texas.."

There is another guy I knew. He was several years older than I was, but he moved in my neighborhood when I was in middle school. At first he would tell us shite and everyone thought it was true, but the more he lied the harder it was for him to keep all his stories together. He use to tell everyone about all the different girls he screwed. One time this girl passed by, that he went to school with. The girl had a boyfriend and he told us "I screwed her a few weeks ago. She is a ho and her boyfriend has no idea". Evidently the boyfriend found out and confronted the dude and he supposedly talked his way out of it.. by lying of course.

Dude was dumb as frick. He had to go to summer school to graduate high school. About a year after graduating he went off somewhere. Fast forward about 10-12 years later and I see this dude at work. He was recruited to work on a project.. What did he do? An engineer. He told me he went off and graduated in chemical engineering at LSU then went to Tulane & got his masters. Now this fricker couldn't pour piss out of a boot if the directions were on the heel, but this same dude is a chemical engineer with a masters from Tulane?

When I talked to him, he told me how he lived on a lake and he will get with me so I can go over to his house and ride in his party barge. He will bbq, etc, etc.. About 3 weeks later that fricker got fired.

this. it got to the point where we would all be piecing together different lies told to each of us in an effort to decipher what was true.

I had a teacher in high school who I'm pretty sure had the lowest IQ one can have without constantly shitting your pants. Dude was a moron. I knew him well as my dad coached football with him, but never really knew what he was like in class. There was another coach who taught that would constantly tell us to report back with stories from the moron teacher's class, so I started to realize this guy was something special. Finally took his class. Pretty much every day was a new story, and even to 15 year olds, it was the dumbest lies ever.

Ones I remember.

-He'd been chased up a tree by a bear
-He'd been to Mexico City and the only way to keep the children from swarming you was to have pockets full of snicker bars and throw them so the kids chase them
-He'd smuggled parrots in from Mexico and theyou put them in their boots when they crossed the border. Gave the parrot tequila to stop it from talking in front of the gaurds.

That was like 15 years ago and I have forgotten a lot of them. This guy truly thought he was impressing everyone and we were all just scratching our heads wondering how this guy is allowed to teach.

Are there some people who just can't help lying constantly, it's just part of their nature?

I've known people who just can't seem to tell the truth. It's like lying comes naturally to them. Like you said, for no real reason, just lying for the sake of lying. I can tolerate a lot of faults in people, but compulsive lying is not one of them. Eventually I will get tired of their constant bullshite and stop talking to them all together.

Occasional white lies, maybe to impress people, is one thing. No one is completely honest all the time, but compulsive liars disgust me.

I agree.

I knew a guy in high school who was a compulsive liar.. Literally just lied.. about things that didn't even matter. Would be hanging out with other friends and he'd start lying about anything and everything to the point the rest of us would just look at each other in disbelief. These people lie about what they own or don't own.. and they constantly make up stories for attention.

I don't like lying, but I can understand when it's to get out of a certain situation.. or it's not to offend someone.. However, I can't stand when people just lie for sympathy or attention..

You sound like an old "friend" that I knew. Beautiful woman, but she would overthink things way too damn much.

I was coaching my son's little league baseball team (13,14 and 15 yo). One of the dads helping let it be known that he had pitched for the Atlanta Braves. He was very specific, the year, his record, etc. It soon became apparent that it was unlikely he had even played high school baseball. He didn't know the difference between a pass ball and a wild pitch and he didn't know how to position the pitcher in the situation of a hit to the outfield with runners on base. My son and I had the baseball encyclopedia and looked up the Braves' roster for the years he claimed he played. Of course, he wasn't listed. I confronted him - he hemmed and hawed saying he was playing under a different name and didn't want to talk about it. He never showed up again at practice.

Sounds more entertaining than any class I've ever had that was taught by a coach.

Some people are just compulsive liars, and my theory is it is deeply rooted in insecurity.
