Do only the dumbest and trashiest of the bunch agree to be interviewed for local news stories? It seems like every local story has commentary from someone who has the IQ of the WBRZ/WAFB Facebook commenter crowd.

Me and my brother talk about this all the time and we've come to the conclusion that these people have to believe that they are more charismatic in their own mind than they actually are.

Like these folks might be the funniest or smartest person in their social circle and believe that a general audience will think they are that as well.

Solid theory.

It's amazing how easy it is to get stupid people to embarrass themselves.

the media pick out the dumbest 2 put on tv, they think it's funny.

I've asked a couple of local media peeps, who do field reports. Privately, they said it's kind of their own little inside joke. When there isn't a sure sign person who saw everything, they will find the dumbest out of the bunch(they talk to groups to gauge the stupidity), and they become the headliners of the story.

When I was living in LSU dorms local news interviewed a group of my friends outside our dorm about college age people smoking cigarettes and increasing the legal smoking age. They played a clip of one of my friends completely out of context. I also made it on local BR news buying a powerball ticket once when the jackpot was like $400 million.

Super trashy post I know.

Me and 2 buddies witnessed a train partially derail(Only 4 actually went off the tracks) near our old apartments. TV crew came, talked 2 us. Ok, sure, we were 14, but we saw it derail, and the cars go into the ditch.

Then went to the 2 hoosiers, with paper bags around their beer cans, and put them on tv. That's when i realized they weren't looking for witnesses, they wanted tv fodder.

One time there was black bear running around the neighborhood. KTVE/KARD brought a microwave stick out here and interviewed a lady a couple houses down. They could've just recorded the footage chopped it up and aired it off a server.

Guess ENG van was more grandeous.

If you are on the news, for the second time, describing what the tornado sounded like...

When radio came in and you could hear voices of newsmakers (FDR, Huey Long, whoever) is when print news stories began to get smothered in quotes and personal testimony. People no longer wanted just facts but also personal stories.

This way of thinking moved into sportswriting. I've read memoirs of old sportswriters who bitched about now having to hang around the locker room after a game to get jock quotes, when before they could just quickly type up a story and proceed to the nearest bar.

This way of thinking moved into TV. Although with our democratization of culture it's not just newsmakers who get interviewed now, but anybody.

It's the only way "reporters" can appear smart: talk to people dumber than themselves.

I have been on the local 6pm news. Was at the COTA track with a buddy and he stared a little too long at the young blonde reporters arse. Next thing I l knew we were being interviewed

I might have the highest iq in this thread. No matter, facebook or no . The one time I was on tv, for an entire segment, I was so nervous I could have been saying gibberish. I was barely able to tell what the questions were.
It went on for 10 minutes but it could have just been one of the rings of eternal hell.

I've been on the local news. I did my best dumb redneck impression and basically just rolled with it. The interview was funny and especially funny to people who know me.
