I'm not talking about welfare on this one.

Do y'all see anything wrong with someone separating from their military spouse and moving away with the intention of divorcing sometime down the line. They are both seeing other people. The only reason they are legally married is so both of them can live in base housing in separate states.

So, the wife (who is not military) is getting to live in base housing (she is paying the rent), kids are going to military school on base, and she is getting to use all of the government benefits (commissary, hospital, etc.). They plan on doing this until he eventually retires years down the line, and then she would have to move off-base.

In my opinion, it is cheating the system and it really pisses me off. What does the OT think?

It's the on-base, tax-free grocery store.

If they can take advantage of the government's stupid welfare system, I say go for it. If you don't get it, someone else is and they don't know how to spend that money to help you as much as you do, I'm sure.

Don't be pissed off over something that has zero affect on your own life?

I wish it didn't effect my life. I have to hear my wife complaining about this. So I guess I should say that it doesn't really piss me off as much as it does her. It's people we know. I do agree with you and it is good advice to not let it bother me. Sometimes things just do, though.

I've never heard of a spouse moving away and just being able to get housing at another installation. Housing is usually pretty full and it's priority for the service members assigned to that location. However, if the spouse is paying rent on that place, what is everyone complaining about? Government is actually making money here - BAH for service member is going to on base housing and spouse is paying for housing at another location. Housing is probably privatized, so the govt may not be making money, but I don't see how the govt is losing money.

Questioning someone's military sacrifice? Where is your patriotism?
They earned their benefits. Every. Single. Penny.

I knew someone years ago in that situation. He agreed to stay "married" for years to help out his wife and kids several states away.

And then the bitch took half his retirement. Nope.

That's exactly what I think she is going to do to him, and it's a shame.

Military spending is out of control and a big part of our budget deficit. You don't get elected on "cut military spending" though

Know a guy who hurt his knee in high school. Before he left the army, he told them he hurt it while deployed. Gets $200 a month from it.

Anytime ever there is something free, people will find a way to get it. Just check out the welfare system, people will have MULTIPLE kids just to live free.. So getting married or divorced is a small risk..

Multiply this by millions of people abusing one program or another, and we're talking about a shitload of money.
