Snow isn't really a problem. It's the ice that's a bitch.
Up north they get the plows out and sand trucks and usually have the main roads passable pretty quickly, except for major storms.

Agreed about sand but I think most places are using liquid mag chloride these days rather than salt.

NYC definitely uses salt on the roads.

It's amazing how quickly the roads get salted up here. I've never had an issue with driving in the snow - and I certainly don't consider myself an expert at it.
Roads (at least all the major ones) are usually being cleared and salted mid-snow, so by the time the snow lets up the roads are completely clear. It's really not that big of a deal if you live in a city. Now out in the smaller towns? Maybe not as easy - I don't know.

Makes sense. The runoff is just going into the ocean. Around here the salt pollutes the reservoirs but somehow the MgCl doesn't.
