Similarities? Sure. Comparable experiences? Not even close.

I've never heard of anyone doing this, and I know people with multiple dogs.

They are trying to find common ground. There’s no limit on sympathy or concern or well wishes. It’s not pie.

I can't figure out a reason to care. There seems to be plenty of more important things to care about.

BTW, I love my damn dog. He's absolutely a member of the family.

I get that, I gladly have conversations with people about their pets but I am capable of talking to them about just their pets without bringing my kids into it as a way to find common ground. If someone is talking about house training their dog, I'm not going to bring my experience in potty training my kids into it. The two situations, while similar, are simply not comparable.

People who do this are sad.

What I can't stand is when they refer to them as their "fur babies". For some reason, that term is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me.
WTF? Are you a female or just a pussy.

Get a life pussy.
And to the OP, I fully agree. People who even begin to equate pets with children in any way are fricking clueless assholes. It especially annoys me when people say that they don't have any kids, "but" they have two dogs or whatever. No, those are two completely separate things, you fricking dipshit.

People who do this don’t have children. We never called our dog our child but he was treated like a Saudi prince. The instant our son was born the dog became a dog. Pretty crazy how quickly it happened.
Sucks for the dog
I think this is how it works for a lot of people. Anyone who equates their pet to their actual children is a horrible parent and should not have kids.

Single people get pets to help themselves with their miserable lives

We have a kid, but my wife calls our dogs her "fur babies" and it does not bother me.
