Can't stand the drivers who pull onto the shoulder and keep their hazards on in a torrential downpour. I've always been told that could lead to others falling in line and rear ending them.

Huh? This is precisely why you shouldn't have your hazard lights on while driving. They're reserved for someone pulled to the shoulder. When people driving use them, it's difficult to discern who is driving and who is pulled over, but people on the shoulder are doing it correctly.

11. What others wear
12. What others drive

Don't forget these things on the list of what people worry about

I generally use both hazards and turn my brights on rain or fog. You can't be too safe out there. You should try giving some consideration to other drivers on the road for once and stop obsessing over you.

If i'm in a torrential downpour with low visibility i drive with my hazards on all the time. not even sorry.

if you're too daft to be able to discern hazards from braking or turning then that's on you. because you are a moron.

PSA:
TURNING - in this case ONE light will blink indicating the direction the driver intends to turn. Since it is impossible for the car to split in half and turn both right and left at the same time please do not confuse hazard signals with simultaneous turning. which again is impossible.

BRAKING - in this case both light will be on, however they won't blink. they will be on for an extended period of time encompassing several seconds. It is possible though extremely unlikely that the driver in front of you will be engaging his brake pedal in a rhythmic fashion to exactly mimic the appearance of hazard lights.

BRIGHTNESS OF HAZARD LIGHTS - much like brake lights and turn signals (see description of these items above and how they are separate and apart from hazard lights - THESE ARE VERY DIFFERENT THINGS PEOPLE!) hazard lights will give of a certain amount of illumination. They are after all "lights". However they do not give off enough illumination to really assist in your ability to see the road. That is not why they are engaged. Do not be confused by this. Visibility on the road is vital as in I need to see you and you need to see me, it is a "two way street" in other words. Being able to see things is an important aspect of avoiding running into them. Therefore during a low visibility setting some low level illumination can be engaged to help others see you.

FLASHING AND/OR BLINKING LIGHTS (Generally speaking) - Also try not to be so distracted by flashing and/or blinking lights. if you do happen to encounter brake lights, turn signals or hazard lights while driving please do not become so enthralled by them that you lose focus of the road. this is not las vegas and the lights are meant to be informative, not decorative. Take note of them, process their meaning as explained above (QUICKLY!) and return your attention to the road. In the case of blinking lights please do not continue to take note of every blink, simply note that they are blinking and trust they will continue blinking until the driver disengages the hazard or turn signal.

IT'S LEGAL!! (special thanks to tgrbaitn08 for finding the statute) - "La RS 32:327 C. Flashing lights are prohibited except on authorized emergency vehicles, school buses, or on any vehicle as a means of indicating a right or left turn, or the presence of a vehicular traffic hazard requiring unusual care in approaching, overtaking or passing.
" Therefore if you are operating a vehicle in a low visibility setting (i.e. hazardous) then you are allowed under the law to turn on your hazards so other drivers know to exercise unusual care in approaching, overtaking or passing.

Stay safe out there people - it looks like rain this afternoon.

It was raining very heavy last night and traffic was down to about 40 on 10 coming into Beaumont. All the big trucks had their flashers on and nobody was changing lanes. I could barely see the car in front of me and it was only about 10-15 feet. All I cared about was keeping my car on the road and not hitting the car in front of me. But there was still a car up on my butt and he kept jumping lanes to get ahead. I just don't understand why he would take that kind of risk..

In a bad rainstorm, I drive with them on also and I don't give a frick what the easily triggered road rage prone a-hole behind me thinks. You obviously see me which is the point. Otherwise you are going to be riding my arse like the reckless and lack of situational awareness dumb frick moron you have been all your life. I am mitigating your reckless stupidity. I don't care if you like it or not. Your fricking problem champ. If you are to stupid to tell flashing lights from a single flashing turn signal or from two non flashing brake lights then get your dumb arse off the road.

In a serious downpour especially with low light in the afternoon or morning, you really can't make out a white or grey car very well at all. Would def use blinkers. If there is a sudden stop on the interstate also put them on until I know the car behind me sees I'm not going 80 anymore.

Pulling over in the rain and getting rammed from behind at 70mph is basically death.

Turning on your brights in fog decreases your visibility as the driver due to increased reflection off the moisture immediately in front of your vehicle.

Not to mention, imagine yourself driving on a two lane road. Out of nowhere, an idiot with his high beams on is spotted only when he's only a few feet in front of your car. It's like someone turning on a spot light into your eyes while driving. You have no time to react or look away because the fog makes it so that you can't see the idiot until it's too late.
