People taking donations after lost loved ones

It seems that every few weeks I get a work email notifying me that someone I work with had a loved one pass. These emails usually mention that a "sympathy" card will be available to sign, and that they will be accepting donations.
Donations make sense if it's someone's parents or a spouse because of funeral expenses. But a grandparent? Aunt/Uncle? One email straight up said that we'd be taking up money to give to a girl to help cheer her up. I don't get it. Your grandfather died so we're all going to pitch in to give you $400? What? Is this a new thing?
Maybe I'm being insensitive but if I have a loved one pass, no one at work, except for maybe my boss will know about it. And that's only because I have a fairly close relationship with my boss. I would certainly not announce a passing in my family, and I damn sure wouldn't ask or accept donations.
Am I missing something?

You donate food, not money.
If they're asking for money to pay for the funeral, and they aren't poor, it's kinda trashy.

When I was growing up, our community always looked out for one another. It is a small country place so everyone knows each other. So if someone passed, the community would kind of help the family.
You are right, now people hop on gofundme every chance they get for anything. Maybe it is just because the internet is so prevalent and we see it more.

Donate if you want to. Don't donate if you don't want to.
Move on with your life and worry about shite that matters

The donations typically go towards a flower arrangement for the funeral.

Pandering on peoples emotions.
Lowest of low.
Had I gotten that email I'd said cheer her up?
Send her over to my house I have something that's free that's known to cheer women up.

I guess it just depends on the environment of each persons work place. My previous job which I was at for a very long time was pretty tight in this area. The core employees who had been there awhile knew each other well and knew personal stuff about family and what not. When someone had a loved pass or some family situation where a kid or wife was sick or whatever. We would always take a collection to help them because they were likely to be out of work for a bit.

oooh ok. See that I can understand.
I'm not against donating. I just wanted to know why donating money was all of a sudden an appropriate thing. I hadn't noticed this as much until recently.

i yelled at my sister for posting on FB that our grandfather had passed away. i don't like anyone knowing any of my business. i especially dislike when people look for that faux-sympathy over social media. i'd have a heart attack if i found out someone in my immediate family was seeking donations.

It depended on the situation, but we usually took donations for a flower arrangement or a donation to a charity of their choice in lieu of flowers. If it was someone we knew needed the money for the funeral expenses (like a child who passed who didn't have life insurance or had outstanding medical expenses) we asked for donations for that.
Another thing we've done in the past was Take a Meal. You set up a schedule where people can either donate a gift card for somewhere to eat or you could provide dinner for them for a night. We've done this for families who have just had babies too.
Sometimes a little kindness goes a long way.

All I've ever been asked to donate regarding a death is a couple of bucks for a flower arrangement. We have taken donations a couple of times when a couple of employees had a house fire and one employee's elderly mother's house was destroyed in Hurricane Ivan but not for funerals/death.

We usually collect for flowers, I don't see anything wrong with that.
Straight cash for the person, frick that.
