I work for one of the FANG’s out west as a software engineer. Louisiana could never compete in my sector.

Most of the people I grew up with in New Orleans still live in the area however it is probably different in other areas of the state.

Moved away and my biggest mistake was moving back. Will not retire here

Yes. Louisiana is a retarded state that professes all the pro-business values of Texas but governs itself in accordance with the continental populism and corruption of France.

Family keeps me here. I bitch and complain about the city and state but I’m probably in the small minority to be a proud Louisianian. I love the people, outdoors & food. I may to one day move but right now I’m fighting the good fight.

There are better jobs and better managed states outside of La.

I and most my friends from college moved out of Mississippi, so I’m thinking this is only the case in crappy states.
It is more of a small town thing than any particular State and is going on nationwide as our economy continues to change, it is just magnified in the states made up primarily of small towns.
Just no small town jobs anymore that pay well, agriculture has become much more mechanized and all the mills/plants have closed down while margins in retail are so thin that only the box stores survive and pay as little as possible
The issue is those who can move away ASAP and the chaff stays around and breeds turning small towns nationwide into shitholes, it is a hard cycle to break.

Not much that I can add that hasn't already been said. There's also some reasons why I like it out here that have nothing to do with Louisiana or New Orleans.
The mountains
The dry air and the deserts
Vegas has lots of great things to do and places to go...and it's also nicely centrally located. 3--4 hours in any direction will take you to the Cali beaches, the Grand Canyon, Zion NP, Death Valley...and if you're a fellow road enthusiast, Route 66 and the PCH are a short drive away.
There's also a lot to be said for living ABOVE sea level.
Last but not least...waking up on fall weekends with football coming on as you have a mid morning breakfast isn't terribly shabby.

eah, this has only been happening for about 20 years now.
40 years....... if you grew up in a small town you saw it first.

Jobs, pay scales, cost of real estate, functional governments, better infrastructure, better schools, overall quality of life... attractive draws.

I’m moving back after living in college station for 7 years. I’m taking a 40k paycut...likely will have to pay to send my kids to a school as good as where I was...
Sounds like a smart decision

I moved away because I didn’t want to work at a plant but more importantly I got tired of the poverty and local politicians.

I moved away when I finished high school. Went to the military and then college in another state. It’s funny because before that I thought Louisiana was paradise and that no other state could possibly come close.
I lived in New England for a few years before moving back to Louisiana about 4 years ago. Yes, the cost of living is higher but there’s so much more to do. There’s absolutely nothing for us here save football and my family. I’ve tried to polish this turd all I can, but we both know it’s terrible here.
As many have already pointed out, the employment options are next to nothing here. We were both lucky but I know many college-educated baws working in jobs that require only a GED. I have an opportunity to move to New Hampshire within the next 2 years so we are probably doing that and getting TFO of La.
Something I’ve recently realized about cost of living here; are we really saving money here in Louisiana with the “low cost of living”? Private school is a necessity in Louisiana and tuition is probably a good $600 a month, flood insurance is another $400-500 a month.

I have ten years left till retirement and I'm out. My girls will be graduating highschool about the same time and they will go to college else where and build a life else where. That will be my gift to them.

I moved away when I joined the Air Force and returned after retirement. I decided to move home to be near what family I have left. I guess I’m the only one on this board who doesn’t have an issue living here because of having a good job that supplements my retirement income as well as being close to my family and friends.

Louisiana is a shithole. If it weren't for family I would have been gone. I think it will only get much worse as the politicians continue running out the plants and projects and Oil and Gas continues going in the shitter.

Moved to a small town in Georgia 20 years ago and thank God for it every morning.
All my family that used to live in Baton Rouge moved to St. Francisville.

I moved away almost 30 years ago for a better opportunity and it will set me up in retirement. I can't wait to get back home during the winter months and early spring in Grand Isle. Wednesday/Thursday highs here are 5 deg with lows well below zero.
