People beginning their statements with 'So' irritates the crap out me.

Is it just me or are more people doing this lately? My wife started doing it and I called her out on it. It seems to me that people do it to make their point or statement more valid or important.

So let me tell you how this thread will go.

So what do you want us to do about it?

Have you done any reflection to see why this bothers you so much? Sounds like you are wound pretty tight. Just chill dude.

So your momma wouldn't breastfeed you. How can we make up for that now?

NPR would trigger you pretty hard. They ALL do that. It's as if they get a hundred dollar bonus if they say it enough times.

Relax. Find a hobby perhaps. Sewing for example.

Yes, and it's so fricking annoying. I agree with the OP.

Yep, I first took notice of it around 5 years ago on a trip. It's almost like a verbal tic. Not sure if it's a subtle spinoff of valley girl speech or just a subconscious way of gathering one's thoughts (I notice it most prominently among burnouts) but it's especially annoying when it's really pronounced in conversation.

Nothing new. Doesn't bother me. On the other hand, how about ENDING sentences with "so" and then trailing off? "Yada yada yada, so....."

You know you were going to catch a lot of shite for this, but you're correct. This is one of the worst pseudo intellectual trends that has ever existed.
NPR reporters and panels are terrible about it. They even did a segment on it.
