Drives me up a wall. So many people do this. Worked with a guy who spoke a lot and had a mild hick accent and after about every statement he made, he would say "right?"

This was a solid 5+ years ago so in a sense he was a trend setter.

The reply of, “I know, right?” Makes me want to punt a baby.

It's called back channeling. They were being nice to even listen to your shitty story, imo.

Oh I think I misunderstood. I thought you meant they were interrupting the speaker with "Right?" because some people will do that.

But you are saying its the speaker themself saying Right?

It's so annoying, right? People just expect that you are going to agree with everything they say, right?

I say "right" a lot when I am listening to someone talk to me and I'd rather them stop talking

Actually, it is arguably the opposite. When someone uses right or the various other terms with a similar meaning they are forcing acquiescence on the listeners part by reinforcing the universal agreement with their statement.

This, mostly libs do this and they are trying to boost their argument by assuming you agree with what they are saying.

When I hear people over-use “right” I want to hold up this sign to them:

It’s a sure sign the person speaking understands how to handle the business end of a cock.
