Pentagon’s $1.7T F-35 jets have ‘maintenance issues,’ finish missions barely half the time: feds

The US military is set to spend at least $1.7 trillion on nearly 2,500 F-35 fighter jets that have “costly maintenance issues” — and have a coin flip chance of completing their missions, according to a new government report released Thursday.
The F-35 air fleet was included as a line item in last year’s annual defense budget, but the Pentagon remains “behind schedule” in maintaining the fighter jets, the Government Accountability Office found.
The GAO report also showed the $100-million-apiece F-35s are capable of performing missions just 55% of the time, and more than 10,000 of the aircraft have been grounded for repairs. Just 450 are currently fielded.
It also cited delays in “setting up military service depots — facilities to complete the most complex repairs,” “inadequate equipment to keep aircraft operational” and “maintenance and supply delays affecting aircraft readiness.”
The findings raise concerns about one of the US military’s most expensive weapons systems just days after a pilot ejected from an F-35 over South Carolina due to what officials described as a “malfunction.”
The jet was lost in bad weather and the unidentified pilot apparently bailed from the cockpit before turning on the aircraft’s tracking system — causing it to be lost for days before debris was found in a wooded area in Williamsburg County, roughly 60 miles from the North Charleston residential neighborhood into which the pilot parachuted.
“Over the life of the F-35 program, sustainment has only recently been prioritized and difficult decisions regarding sustainment continue to be Delayed,” the report states.

Is the F-35 the jet equivalent of the war in Ukraine?

The F-35 was a hot topic earlier this week so here’s the news dump on anything pertaining to an F-35.

Wonder if the same people who worked on the 737MAX also worked on the F-35.

That's not exclusive to the F-35.
Maintenance and supply delays pretty much affect the entire depot industry.

The article is worded very poorly.
The DOD will spend about $400B buying the aircraft. The $1.3T is the remaining program costs over its lifetime and includes training, ongoing maintenance, etc.
Also, the mission ready metric is based on can this plane currently do what we want it to do - it’s not that only 50% of missions are completed.
Lastly, there are 10,000 individual component repairs that need to be made, not 10,000 planes that have been grounded.

Those of us old enough to remember Gulf War I will recall that the news media had spent most of the prior decade telling us that Bradley AFV's broke down, M1 Abrams couldn't handle the slightest bit of dust in the air without seizing their engines, Apache helos were overpriced flying targets that didn't work most of the time, etc, etc.
When the SHTF, everyone of those weapons turned out to be highly effective killing machines that completely outclassed what at the time was thought to be a near peer adversary that might take years to beat.
People in government spend their whole lives getting paid to write reports. Career advancement comes through spin of the data on those reports, and journalists get their career-enhancing clicks with even more spin on said reports.
Meanwhile, every free world military that can afford them is lining up to buy F-35's. I also wouldn't put it past USAF to be part of their budget gaming - "You bought us these expensive planes, now you just HAVE to increase our maintenance budget!"

whats the warranty on those bad boys

agree. should say "maintenance ready for mission 55% of time". not all of which is AF fault due to supply chain, spare parts, labor force issues which are affecting everything

all made up imaginary money anyway
Do we need f-35s?
With all our other aircraft we have ? Isn’t that enough already?
Seems unnecessary just to swing our dick around and show off new fancy expensive equipment and now we have to go back and spend even more money to fix the duds anyway
Sigh.

Everything else is aging out.
F-35 is the replacement to pretty much everything.
Even the super hornet is ceasing production in a year or two.

What is a world class, top-of-the-line, technological marvel of a jet worth if it cannot he relied upon?

Remember they discontinued production of the best fighter in the world…
… in favor of the F-35.

This is a huge mistake that the Air Force and Navy have made over and over going back to the 50s. When you design a single aircraft that can do it all, namely air-to-air combat, ground attack, bomber, reconnaissance) you’ll get a plane that can indeed do all those things, but it won’t be able to do any of them all that well.

Instead of $1 million a win it’s $100 million a jet.
Well, except Ole Miss finishes the game.
