Pedestrian Math And Science Educational Experiences

I've always been fascinated with astronomy, quantum mechanics, and similar subjects. I can't help but feel robbed that my educational experience barely skimmed the surface of such studies--or even worse, approached these subjects with less enthusiasm than students. Partly as a result, taking math and science classes felt more like punishment rather than a reward. It was only through my own curiosity over time that I discovered the more fascinating concepts (not simply definitions) like black holes, quantum entanglement and teleportation, time dilation, gravity, the fourth dimension, non-Euclidean geometry, temperature/boiling points, and various thought experiments.
How many had a similar experience, and how do you think your education, career, etc. would have been affected by a different conceptualization of math and science education? Or have a lucky few of you actually experienced inspired teachers/courses?

All my HS physics teacher wanted to talk about was electricity. I know how amps, volts, and watts relate, and the difference between a serial and parallel battery connection, but not much else.

All I learned from my science and chemistry classes were the consequences of breaking the teachers' glass beakers.

I think he remodeled houses in the summer, so I guess that's where his interest came from.

what are you talking about? those subjects are way too complex for most high schoolers so if you wanna know about it you study it in college.

Because our system makes everyone learn the same thing instead of rewarding creativity and curiosity. Also because our teachers have unions that encourage a one size fits all for everyone.

First day of physics in high school our teacher took us to the gym, asked us to pick a few teams, then gave us newspaper and masking tape. We were challenged us to see who could build the tallest structure in about 30 minutes. Of course our team dominated. Hit the gym rafters with time to spare.
The class pretty much sucked after that.

I will be honest, I feel like I (and everyone else) was deprived of a lot in HS. It seems like the only thing high schools really care about are preparing students to take test like the ACT..

I was a Math major at LSU before I switched majors. I had 30+ hours of math and once it got to 5-15 pages of writing and calculating shite, my head hurt; and I stopped. I do math in my head now regularly on job sites very fast because of it.

Maybe, maybe not. It's never too early to begin teaching fundamentals of concepts. I would say that most of the concepts I mentioned are graspable on some level by students--if just to experiment with and pique their curiosity.
Besides, what would motivate a student to pursue advanced math and science courses in college if not introduced in the lower grades?

I had some really awesome high school science teachers and one amazing Math teacher. They brought energy to the subject and made it fun.
Unfortunately, my k-8 education was at a catholic school with basically parent volunteers and public school washouts for teachers. My first couple of years at HS we’re catch-up years and the rest I was focused on sports and girls.

I've always had an interest in math and science. And I studied engineering at LSU. Some of the most elegant math I ever encountered are Fourier and Laplace transforms. It was like sorcery to be able to integrate a time domain signal and transform it into the frequency domain. Then transform it back by integrating again.
I always thought Euler's formula was pretty cool too. There are 5 magic numbers in math: 0, 1, e, pi and i. All 5 are in Euler's equation.

In all seriousness - you kinda were.
I got my degree in Physics and Astronomy at UT-Austin (one of the better schools for this) so was able to get a very good grounding in this. Not Ph.D. level, I switched to something else for grad school. Frankly the field just doesn't pay that well unless you're a star and things worked out pretty much as I expected.
But I still follow research fairly closely and more importantly I learned the math and statistics that helped me in my career. Put simply - even the best "layman's" books don't come close. You gotta do the math to get it, but when you do it's pretty fricking amazing how not only everything fits together beautifully but is backed up by data incredibly precisely.

I think a big problem in education is that we go from small to big in concepts and application and don't apply problem-centered learning very often. Big concepts and nesting to see how the smaller concepts actually fit in can help, and so can problem-centered learning.
The subject matter I'm interested in is vastly different than what I was presented in HS. But that may be a simple result of being exposed to more things later on.
