BATON ROUGE, LA. (AP) - Authorities say a pedestrian who was struck by an on-duty police officer in Louisiana has died.

The Baton Rouge Advocate reports the pedestrian who was struck by an on-duty Baton Rouge police officer on Saturday has been identified as 51-year-old John Payne. Officials say the pedestrian was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The officer was not injured in the crash and has been placed on paid administrative leave. Police spokesman Sgt. L'Jean McKneely Jr. says speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

That's a PR nightmare...depending on a few certain factors, of course.

Baton Rouge Police detectives are investigating a fatal traffic crash after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a police car Saturday night.

The Baton Rouge Police Department said the accident happened in the 2600 block of Florida Boulevard around 10 p.m. on Saturday.

John Payne, 51, was trying to cross the road when he was hit by a BRPD police car. Payne was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital, where he later died.

Sgt. L'Jean McKneely, a spokesperson for BRPD, said the officer was driving with the flow of traffic, and speed is not a factor. McKneely said the officer passed a sobriety test.

"We're going to do a thorough investigation," McKneely said. "We're going to be forthcoming with all the information that we find during the course of this investigation. We're going to be upfront, and we're going to show everything we have."

The officer involved in the crash was not injured and has been placed on paid administrative leave.

This investigation is ongoing.

Baton Rouge ranks only behind 3 major cities with populations around or well over a million when it comes to pedestrians being struck by vehicles. I believe they are Detroit, Oakland, and Memphis for 2018 (2017 article includes other factors such as homeless killings and points to Florida cities as top). That's just dandy company.

The only issue people should have is another agency should investigate the accident. BRPD being allowed to investigate an accident that involved an on duty BRPD Officer opens the door for people to spread person agendas. Having an outside dept such as the EBRPSO or State Police Investigate the accident should keep the Gravy trains, Helmet heads, and Kibbles & Bitts from blowing this up.
