Good god, that reminds me of the Cypress Freeway collapse during the Loma Prieta earthquake. The lucky ones felt nothing.

Except for a totalled truck and a pair of seriously ruined pants, the guy in the pickup is one helluva lucky SOB.

The rest? Not so sure. Doesn't look good.

I didn't realize it was right next to a stop light, thought it was over a highway.

That means there could have been a dozen or more vehicles just sitting there when it collapsed.

frick.

After some big earthquakes in out here in Calif, I try not to stop underneath overpasses. Too many of them collapsed. Not a big fan of the tunnel that goes under LAX either.

Figg & Mueller have been designing post tension span bridges since the 70’s.

According to the artist's rendering of the completed project, it was supposed to be a suspension bridge of some kind.

Engineers, help me out. Aren't the suspension supports supposed to be put in first in order to support the span as it is installed?

From the media release, it sounds like they were trying a new method that obviously did not work.

Just terrible.

Looks to me that, from the rendering of the final condition (shown in the news article) that the structure relied on a cable stayed type support. That portion of the structure had not yet been installed. I believe that the structure needed temporary shoring and it was overlooked.

Figg Engineering is very well known and normally highly respected firm. They have designed some very complex and much larger structures than this.

Could you imagine seeing that if you knew a loved one was inside one of those cars?

I mean, it's got me choked up and I don't know them. Maybe their families don't even know yet.

thats not a suspension bridge. it looks like a center truss with post tensioned flanges. I dont like the center truss.... that could be very susceptible to torsion.

Lol at the down votes. That is still not a suspension bridge.

USA Today reports 7 cars under the bridge. If there is any good news, the bridge was not open to pedestrians yet.
