quote:

Paul Alexander, widely known as "Polio Paul", contracted the viral disease in the summer of 1952 when he was six years old and was left paralysed from the neck down. He was rushed to hospital in Texas - and woke up inside the metal cylinder where he would spend the rest of his life.

quote:

Mr Alexander could leave his iron lung a few hours at a time after teaching himself to breathe, and would use a plastic stick and a pen attached to it to tap on a keyboard to communicate with people. He would go on to write the story of his life in a book titled: Three Minutes For A Dog.

His condition reportedly deteriorated during recent years, developing a persistent respiratory infection and pain in his legs every time he moved.

Sad even with examples like this of how bad viruses are, the cult around here still won’t get their Covid shot

There are many parents begging this for their kids nowadays by not getting them immunized. I assume they think its less of a hassle when your child can't go anywhere and just lies there.

The falsest of equivalencies. You're in the cult.

Why did people with polio need iron lungs?
Iron lung - Wikipedia
Polio epidemic

The iron lung encased the thoracic cavity in an air-tight chamber used to create negative pressure around the thoracic cavity, thereby causing air to enter the lungs to equalize intrapulmonary pressure.

I'm happy he lived a life he seemed to enjoy. He found purpose and lived to make the world a better place. Everyone - especially those who whine all the time about how unfair modern society is - could learn something from him.

Still though, I can't imagine the torture of that experience. He caught polio around my son's age. My imaginings of my son going through that could cause me to lose it.
