This makes Patricia the strongest hurricane on record
in the National Hurricane Center's area of responsibility
(AOR) which includes the Atlantic and the eastern North
Pacific basins
. The minimum central pressure estimated
from the aircraft data, 880 mb, is the lowest ever for our AOR.
It seems incredible that even more strengthening could
occur before landfall later today

Got a strong El Nino in play, meaning those waters are extra warm (87 degreesish).

Damn, I need to hurry up and get work done. I'm going to be glued to the stream later.

My honeymoon was in PV. Loved it. Hope for the best for them. A lot of the area outside of the resorts is pretty poor. I hate to think those neighborhoods don't even know it's coming.

Dear El Chapo,

I have been informed that you are on the run. I'm coming for you and you can not out run me. If you have not fled to the south or gone underground like the weasel you are, I will find you. These are my orders.

In the event that I do not find you, the United States FBI agents disguised as Red Cross volunteers will also be looking for you during the relief efforts spearheaded by the United States.

Sincerely,

Hurricane Patricia

Can someone please explain to me like I'm five years old how old the barometric pressure characterizes the strength of a hurricane, specifically why lower pressure means a stronger system?

okay, like you're five then. You know how when you drain the bath tub it creates a vortex? The drain = low pressure, the water in the tub = high pressure. The bigger the drain, the bigger the vortex and the more energy created by the water (high pressure) going to the drain (low pressure). Imagine a 10 mile wide drain in a 50 mile wide tub. That's one hell of a vortex.
