Pat Summitt's family said Sunday that the last few days have been difficult for the former Tennessee women's basketball coach as her Alzheimer's disease progresses.

Amid reports of Summitt's failing health, her family issued a statement asking for prayers and saying that the 64-year-old Summitt is surrounded by the people who mean the most to her. It also asked for privacy.

The statement was posted on the Pat Summitt Foundation's website and was issued by Erin Freeman, a spokeswoman for the Summitt family.

Former Tennessee player Tamika Catchings was flying to Knoxville to visit the coach instead of returning to Indiana with the WNBA's Fever. Other former players were issuing support on Twitter through the "PrayForPat" hashtag. Phoenix Mercury center and Tennessee alum Isabelle Harrison said former Lady Volunteers players were keeping up with Summitt's situation in a group text-message chain.

I'm sure her son's recent events haven't helped.

I doubt she was aware of it. 64 is pretty young, but I knew someone whose mother was diagnosed at 43. Brutal fricking disease.

Very sad to hear, but in all honesty the quickness with which her disease has progressed is in many ways a blessing. Far too many Alzheimers patients wither away slowly over many, many years, and it takes an unbelievable toll on the remaining family.

Prayers sent for the Summit family, Tennessee fans and basketball players/coaches.

Girl I went out with a few times was her personal assistant when she went there. Went to see her a little while back and said she was in pretty bad shape, she told me her dog had gained like 20 pounds bc she had always given it scraps of steak. She was doing it over and over again bc she didn't remember doing it before. Sad

Dr Alzheimer's first patient (that presented with the as yet unnamed disease) was a German woman in her 40s.

OP's title is insensitive.

The younger the patient,,the more quickly it progresses.
