Passport Renewal Fees

Can someone please explain to me why the hell the government needs $110 to issue me a replacement passport book? We really have to shell out a Benjamin for Something that should cost a few dollars?
What makes it even worse is the fact that we have to go through the trouble of taking our own picture and sending it in with the application.
Yea...I'm mad.

Considering the fact that you have to send your old one in to get a new one means they are (by definition) "replacing" it.

It's the government. By convention, they are not allowed to charge you a fair fee.

Replacement or renewed one? If it's a replacement of a lost or stolen passport they have to do a lot of work to make sure the old one isn't reused.
And if you lose or get another stolen inside of 10 years, they will not issue you a 3rd.

Because charging us $110 to leave the country sounds much more valuable than $90.

There’s actually some high tech stuff that goes into a passport.
The real kicker is that they are all manufactured by one company ... in South Korea.

Renewed ours last year. Stink that you have to pay multiple times for everything, passports, car taxes, etc.
I wish I could at least designate what my taxes go towards. Would make me feel slightly better.

That picture has to be on there for 10 years....I'm quite content choosing which picture will be on there. Most women would agree with me on this as well.

IMO, since the US government REQUIRE you to have one while travelling abroad, they ought to be supplied to you, much as giving you a Social Security Number. Let alone paying north of $100 for them.
