Yeah? It collapsed, so that’s a strong indicator that the structure has some issues.

That doesn’t look salvageable.

It’s two different types of construction. Floors 1-8 is a concrete and post tension type for the parking garage. Floors 9-17 is the structural steel. The parking garage could be salvaged.

What are the odds this is the fault of a subcontractor who was a "forced hire" to keep the right people happy? Because there are no major projects in this city where that does not happen

Today isn't the day for that.

The news report just said 1 fatality and 3 unknowns.

19 treated at scene with 18 of them going to the hospital.

Will need to bring in at least two cranes. One will be maxed on lifting capacity. A lot of jackhammering and cutting of steel before that can even start. Which means someone has to wade in there and make those cuts. Each pick will have to be carefully coordinated. I can’t even imagine the amount of OSHA inspectors that will be there as well.

No amount of shoring of those floors would have prevented that pancake when it fell. A lot of folks are looking at root cause. Was it extra windy? If so that crane operator is fuct. He’s liable for the pick and determination if it’s safe it not.

It’s possible, but that’s a lot of weight with steel and concrete falling on a post tension structure with a lot of open air areas. The top is a total loss for sure, parking lot is still probably iffy

Not to mention, if you want people to come, you probably don’t want them to know they’re in a building that partially collapsed

What about a situation where it may not be windy but has some random gusts?

They will cut that back to undamaged structural steel and rebuild.

Stress testing on the foundation would say otherwise.

It’s the operators call. But there is a designated safety officer on these jobs, who keeps wind speeds and other conditions. He/she relays the info to the operator. If it’s gusty we always shut it down. Just not worth it.

Say they are picking a wall form that is 10’ tall by 20’ long. The surface area of a single gust can pull that crane over in a split second.
