I’m curious. Were there guys operating those cranes when this happened? If so, how did they get them down?

Most indications are that this happened while crews were down from the building.
I don’t know if this meant regular crews, crane operators, both, or what.

Not sure. They looked to move some in the short videos though.

Those operators don’t come down for break. Not sure if they were in the cabs but they normally don’t come down during shift

Those are some long spans on the north end of the building, 25'+. If those shores were pulled too early and already started bowing thats on the contractor, but if theres not documented calcs with the engineer proving it works then theres going to be hell to pay on the engineering end too.

I’d hate to be Heaslip or any other engineer in this project. I doubt VE had anything to do with it

Yeah long spans for members I wouldn’t call “big”. Also, as the other poster noted not sure how that cantilever detail was ever supposed to work like that.
It would be nice to see the drawings in their current revision state. Permit drawings are often just a jumping off point (unfortunately).
Thanks to fightin tigers for posting those.

Don’t know how to link but articles about the WWII hotel were in newspapers recently. As each floor was poured, each sagged creating a need for more support throughout. Not staying there. Google it

Yep, which is why we hate doing anything design-build. You are constantly being pushed to make it cheaper or remove something from the project. Glad it wasn't us.
I feel like most major construction projects in this country, are design-build. Yet, here in LA, we can't seem to figure it out. Why is this?

LINK ]SEP 24, 2019 NOLA: "New Orleans' top building inspector among those suspended amid federal corruption probe"
The official in charge of all New Orleans building inspectors was one of two city employees suspended last week amid a broad federal probe of corruption allegations in his department, according to city records.
Larry Chan, who holds the title of "building official" and is in charge of inspecting and approving construction projects, was put on emergency suspension last week via a letter to him from Chief Administrative Officer Gilbert Montaño. The suspension was “based on an ongoing investigation into your involvement in the alleged illegal issuance of city permits," the letter said.
Montaño also suspended Richella Maxwell, a business development specialist in the Department of Safety and Permits, for the same reason, according to city records.

Nice find. Bet your downvote came from a city employee.

Well those Nelson studs are more than 3” apart but that’s not uncommon, plus the column lines seem to be about right . No expert here just an observation

Would be interesting if this years long investigation put people at risk.

Same on the expert level. At one time I could draw all that, but that's as far as it goes. Just thought someone might have comment or it may quell some speculations.
The 3" typ looks like it is only calling out from the beam connection point though.

I don't know what the reporter asked but her response was..... "mam, this is a construction site, people were working doing various jobs."

That is what I was referring to in my earlier post about the city getting drug into this.
