Over 1.73 million people fly daily in and out of US airports. One fatality this week.

How many people died today in a car accident across the country?

If you want to play the odds, you could argue that this week is now one of the best times to fly

I flew into and out of Birmingham today and had window seats on both flights. Also heard that some moron was caught with a loaded S&W in his luggage there this morning. Needless to say, I am glad to be back home and safe.

I agree with this 100%...in my head.

But flying still gives me a little anxiety. It’s not just being in the air, it’s the entire process, driving into ATL to Hartsfield, going through security and remembering what shoe to take off and what needs to go in the bins, getting molested by TSA when I get it wrong, getting to my gate (on time) getting herded on board while praying there’s enough overhead space so I don’t have to check my bag...the whole process just kind of sucks to me.

Stories of exploding and flaming engines just kind of add to that feeling of dreading the next time I have to fly.

Is that right statistically? I’ve used that argument, and some math dude called me on it. Gamblers fallacy, I think he said.

In a vacuum, you’re correct. Statistically, a major mishap doesn’t make flying safer in and of itself.

But what usually happens is that airlines will ground their fleets, do extra inspections, additional crew training, etc, which makes flying a little safer after immediately after a mishap.
