Also, puberty. I got in trouble way more in middle school. A lot of it was acting up to impress girls.
Don't drug your kid. Discipline them. Kids are dealing with a lot at that age.
Do they not suspend kids? I set off a stink bomb in 7th grade. Got suspended for 3 and got my arse beat by my rents.
Never was suspended again. Never even got a detention in HS.

your job as a parent is to prepare him for real life. If you acted stupid in real life, say at work, you'd have consequences. You lose things you have earned. He was a good kid, got video games and a cell phone. He acts up, like real life, he loses things he's earned.
Keep in mind though, if you didn't take his phone away immediately after he threatened you, you just broke him. It'll take a lot of work to get that back and fix what YOU broke.

I acted up at that age and turned out normal. Well, im not normal but I am a CPA with a wife and kids so I can at least pretend

Yep, this is most likely the problem.
I'm pretty much a single parent, my soon to be x comes and goes in his life every 3-6 months depending on how drunk she is.
Guess I need to seek professional help, not sure I want to beat his arse when I'm about all he has.
