The camelback is closest to his body, but there's a larger mesh pack with straps that has white stripes on the side that goes down to his legs. Wonder if that's a tent or shelter or what.

Likely someone else took a photo of a loved one at a trailhead and the murderer was standing somewhere in the background. As soon as he sees cameras come out he turns around. Later people realized they have a picture of murderer before he commits crime.

It looks zoomed and enhanced. Most likely either a park surveillance camera, trail cam, or someone unintentionally caught him in the background of their picture. Probably option 3.
Always the off chance someone thought he was acting weird and snapped a pic but that's doubtful.

Authorities were asking everyone there that day to check pics and homeowners to check cameras also near by.
