I kind of agree with this. 8p for a bedtime? Holy cow. You only get to see them a couple hours a day.

When they get out of the elementary ages, they need to learn to manage their own time.

have boys 10, 8, 5

week day bed time is 8, lights out/electronics off at 8:45, pretty much no exceptions if at all possible. I wake up the older ones at 6, the younger one at 630. My middle kid is usually asleep before the 845 deadline and is up before i go in to wake him usually.

weekends...i dont give a frick unless we have something they need to be rested for. Its their weekend too, i let them enjoy it.

most kids need 8-10 hours of sleep, so use that as a reference. I understand it can be a pain in the arse on weekends, but for your childs development...they need that sleep.

that's what we did with our kids, wife's idea, she would tell them they could stay up as late as they'd like, or not go to sleep at all, but the first time they didn't complete a homework assignment or had issues being tired at school there would be bedtime rules

We actually did similar with our daughter when she got to middle school. She's naturally a night owl. There were multiple screaming fights and tantrums through elementary school getting her to bed. She's very strong willed as well, which just made it worse. We just relaxed strict bedtimes, took away electronics at 9, and made a rule she had to stay in her bedroom. She's a good student and gets her school work done and doesn't cause issues getting up and dressed in the mornings, so we just decided to pick our battles better. Pretty sure she stays up well past midnight a lot of nights.

When ours were wee tots, we usually put the down around 830.

Over time, it creeped up.

My son says he remembers falling asleep while I was holding him to the ER and Law and Order themes.

Electronics

I might sound like an a-hole (surprise!) but if you need bedtime entertainment, read a fricking book.

Agree - but we usually try to tell her a bedtime so we don't have to negotiate when it's time.

My ex used to drive me nuts with this stuff. I think her motivation was so she could get in bed around 9.

I would sneak up and play video games with the kids after she went to bed.

Agree with this, too.

I'm up when she's up in the mornings, I pick her up from school at 4, and she's up with me at the asscrack watching soccer on the weekends. (And I coach her soccer team.)

She gets sick of my shite long before I get sick of hers.

everybody's parenting is different and I don't really judge it, but I don't understand parents letting their young kids stay up late, especially under 5

young kids crave schedule and routine and require lots of sleep for brain development (our 2 year sleeps 13 hours every night and takes a 2.5 hour nap every day)

and for people talking about spending time with your kids, what about spending time with your spouse?

Wtf? 7:30?! Who does that to their kids? Jesus.

During the summer months, once homework is done they’re out the door and they’re still outside at that time.

Then they come in. Eat. Shower. Bed on school nights.

8 year old - 9 on school nights.
11 year old - 930 on school nights.

On weekends I tell them midnight at the latest. But usually on Fridays, since they woke up at 6am, theyre asleep but 10-1030.

Saturday’s the boy (8) will stay up until midnight. 11year old can usually make it with him most of the time. She’s such an old lady though. She’s the epitome of “old soul.”

That’s a buttload of sleep. I’m not saying too much, because I don’t know if there’s such a thing for a small child, but it does seem beyond 10 hours that it wouldn’t be beneficial. I say “seems” because I don’t pretend to have researched it.

How old are your kids? Are they involved in sports or extracurricular activities yet???

My 9 year old typically has some type of practice at least 3 nights a week…won’t get back to the house until after 8 most of those nights….so good luck keeping that 6:30 dinner time in tact if your kids get involved in other things

this is why i said that we try and do 845 lights out. Its not always adhered to because my older kids play travel baseball and football and always are wanting to work out. Youngest plays baseball and is starting soccer and basketball.

We do our best on the 8pm bed and 845 lights out, but plenty of times we go past that.

But at about 945, i go check on the 3 and makes sure they are all asleep.

My 14 month old son is in bed between 730 and 8 and has gone basically straight to sleep for the last 6 months. It took a while to get there

My daughter is almost 5, and she is usually asleep around 9. Weekend can be later.

Because other people are like "my four" or "my 6" and you're in here dropping "numerous" and classifying them by age groups

I'm just curious to know how many is "numerous"
