I was there in October for the first time in 10 years and was shocked. New Orleans went from "gritty" to "shithole". My first uber driver in town coming from the FQ back to my place in the GD said she's moving to Atlanta to get out of the shithole. She was a NOLA native of 30+ years who said it's so bad she's moving to the south side of Atlanta. Let that sink in.

What are the citizens of NOLA going to do about it?

Yall are the next Detroit and I'm afraid it's too late to right the ship.

It's a shame too, NOLA used to be a cool town, at least to visit. Now it's not even a cool town to visit. It's Jackson MS with jazz.

Too funny. I just wish the tourism money would dry up. End that turd hole for good.

Yeah the only way NOLA gets cleaned up is if tourism dries up. It happened after Katrina as NOLA had to portray that it was safe after what people saw on the news after Katrina. Sadly it’s reverted back to its old ways. It’s not 90’s level bad but not far from it.

Even if individual tourists stop visiting that won’t be enough. The weekend visitor tourists don’t make a difference. You have to see major conventions and sporting events pull out.

I don’t want to see it but the reality is that won’t happen unless there is a mass shooting/casualty event in the French Quarter. Something that gets national attention and to the point the city can’t ignore it. It’s pathetic it would take something like that but at this point outside of something like that I don’t see anything changing.

Here’s the thing though: in the 90’s sure it was bad, but the criminal element was for the most part kept segregated from law-abiding citizens, and the tourist areas were also *generally* safe.

That ain’t the case these days…

I don’t think this is true. Crime existed throughout the city. Today, large swathes of uptown, lakewiew and midcity are pretty safe.

In the 80s/90s audubon park was not a place you would want to be. Freret, Irish Channel, area around the prytania theater, bayou St. John and most of midcity had crime everywhere. The city was much more of a checkerboard in the 80/90s than it is today.

not really - I was a kid in the 80s and 90s and grew up in mid city

Freret is better now than it used to be. The channel has been bad forever even when my family lived up there

Canal St and the Quarter were a lot safer then, too. And Marigny and Bywater were not hipster

The guy that wears dresses wears horrible dresses. Like I'm not taking advice from that on fashion. Now if he wore something that didn't look like it came from Penny's or Burlington maybe. Those dresses are horrible.

Might as well list the cause of death as Nola @ 0130 hrs.
