Or just label it with caffeine contents clearly shown.

It is labeled on their menu with how much caffeine each size of that drink contains.

Do we actually know the extent to which this dampens his ability to discern what he's putting into his body?

How can this guy be out on his own in any capacity if he has no clue what he's putting into his body?

There's this really nice guy who bags groceries at the Rouses on Drusilla. He's mentally disabled but super friendly and takes pride in what he does. He's capable of making simple decisions and bagging groceries.

He's likely not capable of understanding how much caffeine he should consume in a day and then doing the math to figure it out. I doubt this guy was either.

Honestly shocked Panera didn't pull these after the first person died.

Any strong dose of stimulant causes blood vessels to constrict. It can be a formula for a heart attack or stoke.

How disabled are we talking? Full-on mentally disabled and can't read?

He clearly seemed to do okay working at a grocery store.

You're implying he has zero sense of what he's doing, where he goes, or what he eats or drinks. If true, then how was he functioning to such an extent that he holds down a job and walks to Panera Bread regularly and regularly chooses a drink he wants until this particular drink when he is completely unable to identify what hes drinkinh.

It doesn't sound to me like Panera has adequately alerted customers to the risk.

If anything they've misrepresented it by saying it's akin to a cup of dark roast coffee.

People who drink 4-5 cups of coffee a day are only getting about 400-500 mg of caffeine.

This dude got like 1600 mg of caffeine

The article itself said that the guy, "....generally avoided drinking large amounts of caffeine...".

Both this guy and the original girl, as a rule, avoided things with large amounts of caffeine. For some reason both decided to drink something called "Charged Lemonade".

ETA: On top of that, to have consumed the amount of caffeine stated, the guy would have had to have chosen the largest size and the drink offering with the most caffeine, and he would have had to have drank it without ice.

Seems like odd behavior for a person who "....generally avoided drinking large amounts of caffeine....".

Dude was probably bagging groceries and collecting carts.

Panera literally put an energy drink on tap where the caffeine dosage can't be controlled, like it is in a can.

I think it's possible for someone to collect carts while also not understanding how much caffeine they should consume.

This will end with a disclosed settlement ($5 million for each family) and Panera pulling the drink

Should a perfectly safe and clearly labeled product be pulled from the shelves and the store be held liable because an individual incapable of making informed choices made bad choices?

You're saying ONLY in situations in which caffeine is involved, he loses his sense of understanding? Even after the article states he always avoided caffeine? He clearly has some idea of what caffeine is and what it does and he has a sense of understanding in terms of knowing what he's drinking.

I think he tried it, liked it, kept drinking it eventually succumbing the caffeine effects after it took full effect.

Of course he likely didn't know what 1000mg of caffeine in one day would do, very few people have consumed that much caffeine in a single day.
