To answer your question, I've never painted them. Know a lot of people like plasti-dip though. Personally, I vouch for powder coat. Can be done for around $75-$100/rim and is much more durable. Just have to be careful cleaning them bc some wheel cleaners will cause the finish to fade.

It is if you do it poorly, sure. If you do it correctly, it will come off looking like a factory / stock option. And it's not that hard to get it done right.

*edit*

One thing I forgot to mention in my 2 bit instructions earlier was that you have to consider the lugs and threads and how the paint will affect them!

Yeah if it looks stock, it can come off all right. Kind of like how the wheels on a gc srt can look.

I used painter's tape b/c it's so easy to cut and mold. but if the rim isn't clean/degreased, may not wanna stick otherwise.

powdercoating suggestions here are very good too btw if you wanna spend the coin. for whatever it's worth to you, i used a rustoleum high heat paint for mine.

Plastidip is spray on rubber coating, or i guess stretchy rubber-like plastic. I think each can is like 8-11 bucks depending on where you buy it. I'd recommend high heat rustoleum or powdercoating like these other's are mentioning. I have used plasti-dip on things like tow-hooks b/c it's easy to remove them and just re do them when they wear down or start peeling. Of course, a lot of people plasti-dip b/c it's not permanent and you can just peel it right off and change color or re-do it any time you want for cheap... but it will be harder to get an "even" looking job with a normal spray can of plasti-dip b/c it can sometimes spit out tiny chunks in my experience. Of course, I never bought the high dollar spray applicator system they make.
