250mph would be a direct hit from an EF-5 tornado.

I know there are hurricane force winds that could impact the area - maybe up to 120 mph sustained. But it seems like a flood is a bigger threat in south Louisiana. Or maybe riots.

quote:

Once it's finished, 250 mph winds could hit this building on Harding Boulevard and the people inside would be just fine.

Then, when the winds die down, they could go out and save everybody else.

The $6.6 million Parish Safe Room and Training Center will be nestled between the Mayor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness and the Emergency Medical Services buildings just south of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport.

Probably would have been better to make it bullet proof in that area.

The EBR Command Center used to be in the basement of the Governmental Building downtown. I remember the first time I went down there and the guy giving the tour was bragging it would survive an atomic blast. I asked, since we were in south LA, if they weren't more worried about flood waters from the giant river three blocks away. Dude got real quiet.

Glad to see they wised up and moved it.

You think they are paying per mph?

They moved it up to Harding by the airport years ago. This is an addition to the current Emergency Operations Center.

I did some work on this new project a while back, glad to see it breaking ground. It's mostly federal money.

That’s ridiculous. Waste of tax money. Build it to withstand 230 and no more.

If we get 250 sustained winds, you won't need a Emergency Mgmt building

Excellent burn. It was me! I'm the tour giver at EBR Emergency Center.

No worries, they probably built it with holes in the roof to allow drainage so the roof would not collapse during heavy rainfall. We will pay for another new one in 5-8 years, consider this one a trial building.

The idea was that if a tornado spawned during a hurricane and hit this building, it would survive along with the first responders inside.

Their vehicles would probably all be fricked, but you know, details.

Yes, that's usually how that works. 130 mph is way cheaper then 250 mph.

It’s not designed for sustained winds of 250mph. It’s a ratio based off of that per new code.

These missile impact tests are done at tex a&m and use an air cannon to shoot a 2x4 at the door assembly and exterior walls to see if it holds up. Believe it or not the door assembly test tops out at 100 mph cannon shot so i guess a 250mph tornado wont shoot a 2x4 more than 100?
