Only thing I can think is a power failure and gravity drove the lift backwards in absence of power or some type of brake mechanism.
All weight on the lifting side will want to descend since there is no weight on the chairs coming down on the other side.

I don’t understand why some people stayed on the chair up until the turn, bailing out early looked a lot safer.

You will never see what you think looks logical from your couch vantage point, when there are dozens of people rapidly entering a stressful, dangerous, unexpected situation.

If I'm ever on a ski lift and it starts going twice the normal speed in reverse I would absolutely be looking for a place to bail off.
