It is a long read but part of the loneliness epidemic is the rise of the involuntary celibacy movement. One guy is interviewed here. Poor dude whose Dad left him when he was 2 years old, raised by a single mother, who isn't particularly handsome/outgoing/charming and was bullied by girls. No real news that "mean girls" exist but you got to feel for these guys who have not a lot going for them in a culture where their told they have it easy due to "white privilege" but by many objective measures girls are doing better and are catered to in education.

Some idiot in Canada ran over a bunch of folks, mainly women, who was active in the involuntary celibacy movement and that's brought it to light.

I will admit I'm more lonely than I should be. I see going to a church a great way to meet people a socialize but the problem is I'm not religious AT ALL. Which sucks because I generally enjoy the type of people that go to church. But listening to the preacher for 90min and trying to read the bible is boring AF to me. Has been that way since I was old enough to remember.

Thinking of joining habitat for humanity since I have some building skills. Only concerned since its a faith based organization that I will try and be evangelized while putting up siding. Answering questions about which church I don't go to and why isn't a comfortable conversation.

While I have no evidence to counter this it just seems stupid considering just a few decades ago it was common for girls to be married and pregnant by 15 or 16 YO.

I dont know a single person in their 30s that had parents married with children at 15 and 16. My parents didnt have me until they were in their 30s, and this was over 3 decades ago.

The amount of women with children out of wed lock, especially in south LA, is quite alarming.

I summarize all this because loneliness and social isolation are the problems that undergird many of our other problems.

It doesn't help that many people's idea of social interaction is social media. They browse instagram and see snapshots of people's "perfect" lives and it makes them feel even worse about themselves.

People are now more concerned with following other people's lives than living their own.

No, but making a conscious decision to rebuild the nuclear family and social engagement of society is.

Edit: I am all for Free Market / Capitalism, but we cannot become morally bankrupt as a society due to it.

I'm not married, in a relationship nor socially isolated but am socially wealthy so I can't relate to this topic.

Sometimes I get really lonely… especially when I'm throwing a Frisbee.

I went to a therapy group to help me cope with my loneliness, but no one else turned up.

didn't think it was even possible to be lonely with social media. I remember before social media if there's nobody there, then' you're F%^^#. Now all you have to do is login and boom, friends everywhere

The Information Age is reinforcing ideas that people are easily judged based on a few select criteria and emotions are meaningless. No wonder people are fricked up

People view their interactions as a meme rather that some feeling, caring human being.

But none of it is meaningful.

Virtual reality is still, well, virtual.

This goes to one of the reasons that Scruffy avoids the “feel good/pray for...” threads.

Scruffy sees all of that “emotion” as fake. People become angry when you say that, but what meaning does it truly hold?

We are social creatures and crave social interaction.

In the past, we lived in smaller communities. These could be small towns, villages, or even just neighborhoods in large cities.

People had relationships with their neighbors. They knew each other.

None of you could pick Scruffy out of a lineup. We don’t actually know each other.

Social media isn’t even a crutch. It’s a drug which furthers these problems.

Ironic the rise of social media is paralleled by a rise in loneliness.
