I am so sorry for your loss. What a wonderful life you shared with your dog-16yrs! That doesn't happen without a great deal of happiness and love being shared between dog and owner/family. You're a great pet owner and any pet would be fortunate to have you as it's caretaker.

She died with her head in my wife’s hands and laying in my arms. She wasn’t ever alone, all the way to the end. Feeling the spark of life leave her body has crushed me.

It's a heartbreaking feeling. Something that helped me reconcile the entire affair was remembering all the times she provided me unsolicited or undeserved comfort at the end of a hard day. The least we can do is, as imperfect as we are as humans, is return the same service to our true best friends at the end of their lives.

So sorry for you. Had to put our girl down end of '23. Haven't balled like that in a very, long time. Glad you were able to have that long with her. They are family.

Just had to put our 16 year old man down thanks to a stroke. Never had to put one down before and it was hard and still hurts to think about so I feel your pain. only thing I can take solace in is knowing he lived a great life and was loved so much. Your family will be in my thoughts and prayers for comfort during this hard time.

We are doing the same on Monday. I’m dreading it but her quality of life is so poor.

Praying for you… it will get better. Dogs only break our hearts one time

Damn, wife must be cutting onions. Got two old ones that are nearing the end. One of em just left the table after our morning love and scratch session. He's 14, the other 12. Lots of memories. Had lost my daughter to cancer and my black lab was stolen months earlier. There's a FM station here that has a buy and sell program every morning during the week. Was listening to it and an old man was on needing someone to adopt his dog. Drove to his house way back in the woods and Max was tied to a tree, living in a doll house. The old man was keeping him temporarily for grandkids but they never picked him up. I took him just to help the old man out and figured I'd take him to the pound. Going on 16 years now, and looking at having to do the same.

Best wishes to you my friend. I've battled some anxiety and thought disorders for most of my life and situations like this can really exacerbate the intrusive thoughts. It feels overwhelming but we're just putting one foot in front of the other.

God bless you, I'm sure she had a wonderful home for her whole life. I've had to put three down over my lifetime for various terminal issues and I remember the first one like it was yesterday, and it's never an easy thing to do. They become our family and give unconditional love back. Just remember there are "rescue" dogs out there that need your loving home. A new puppy doesn't replace the old one, you just gain a new family member and a new set of memories. As soon as you're able, give another pup a chance at the same life. It will help you heal and probably save a pup's life. Best wishes to you!

I'm sure we'll get there eventually, because we both love dogs, but this has been absolutely brutal. We have two more dogs that are both around ten years old and I have no idea how I can do this again two more times. I'm already in it with them and I'm going to have to let them go one day but i have no idea how I can do this again. Maybe you get better at dealing with grief once you've done it before and I know it's still really fresh, but it's hard to even imagine doing this again.

On the other hand, I don't want to be so afraid of the pain of the end that I miss out on the love of today and it's an ugly fact of life that everything/everyone is going away eventually. We can't just hide from the whole world. Idk, I'm sort of word vomiting but it's a lot to process.

Take solace in the fact you gave her a wonderful home for 16 years. I'm very sorry for your loss.

Gotta get another pup. It’s never a replacement. It’s a new chapter. First time the pup falls asleep in your lap it’ll ease things along.

You've got alot on your plate right now dealing with two more older dogs. I thought she might be your only one. You're right, when you really care for animals it always hurts when they go. But, most animals won't outlive us and we know that going in. You just have to give all the love you have and enjoy all the love they give. It's just not forever, sadly. My hope is that in my idea of Heaven all of my past dogs will be there waiting for me along with all the people I love that have gone before me. God bless you as you deal with the greif!

Hard day and RIP. First time I had to do it, I came home wrecked and took one look at her bed and collar and toys and threw them all away. Then regretted it the next day. It will be hard, but get another one. It will not be the same, but it will be great.

I’m so sorry for the loss of your beloved family member. I’ve experienced it and it’s the most wrenching thing I’ve ever had to do.
