I've been playing 12 years ,self taught.I know my skill level and how great I'm not.

If someone is visiting and asks me to play I'll play a song.I've never said "Hey I'm going to play my guitar".

I'll play if I have a woman over and she wants to hear my stuff. Chicks really dig this one ballad I wrote called "Three Holes, Two Tits, One Purpose." Shows off my sensitive side.

I was at a party at someone's house once, and the bartender started singing, impromptu, without any music or anything. It was extremely awkward. Many people just went inside to get away from the awkwardness.

Agreed I think playing the guitar is bad, but singing makes it that much worse

Speaking of singing, I find it equally annoying when you go to a concert and some dipshit starts singing to where you hear his/her shitty voice over the real singer.

Agreed, cheering after a song and talking at a level where it's not annoying is the only thing acceptable

Play her Tenacious D.'s "frick her Gently".

You don't always have to frick her hard.
In fact, sometimes,it's not right to do.

It depends. If I have company that's in my close social circle in an informal gathering type of scenario, I'll pick up an acoustic or unplugged electric and just kind of noodle while I take part in the conversation. I do the same thing when I'm watching TV, killing time for some reason, whatever. It's just kind of something to keep my hands busy, I think. Maybe because I'm an ex-smoker. But I would never pick one up and launch into something with the intention of drawing attention to myself.

I think to pull it off you have to be amazing at guitar, and be able to play almost anything, otherwise you are just an amateur that nobody wants to hear.

Add to that, entertaining and fun, which even gifted musicians have trouble pulling off.

Very awkward and odd by default and should be avoided unless perhaps close friends who know you play and like to hear, sing along, whatever.

I wouldn't mind hearing a friend play his guitar. But only if that friend was Jeff Beck, Eddie Van Halen, or Keith Richards.

Anytime I see a guitar I grab it and play the smoke on the water riff bc it's the only thing I know how to play then I set it back down. I don't think that has made anyone uncomfy yet.

At the same time, although I've never seen it done, a funny story-song like "God's Own Drunk" by Buffett could be a good way to pull it off.

I have a friend who plays guitar and sings pretty good. Whenever we are at a wedding or something like that he will sometimes join the band for a few songs, which everyone enjoys.

If asked at an event - sure.

If just playing for no other reason than because you want to play - frick you.

Maybe it's just my limited experiences, but I feel that most people become uncomfortable when someone in the room picks up the guitar, and I know most around here despise the type of guy who plays in the quad at major universities. While I am making a large generalization that could be completely off base, I am curious what you guys think. Thanks!

Only good if it's accompanied by real singing of real songs.

Depends. 95% of the time it's douchey and someone just looking for attention.

When it's just a group of good buddies getting absolutely shitfaced around a fire or something and someone breaks it out and everyone all drunkenly sings along...it's cool.

I absolutely hate when people play an instrument unsolicited. I don't care for music all that much, and live music is so loud and annoying. I honestly usually leave if someone starts playing an instrument, especially a guitar. I leave restaurants if someone shows up and starts playing music.

You sound like a fun guy to hang out with on a Friday night.
