If you ever get a chance to visit Gettysburg, hire one of the local park rangers to do a personal guided tour of the battle grounds. We visited this summer and my wife scheduled this for us. Way better than riding the bus tour or buying the CD tour. The tour guide actually drove us around and gave more in depth background of the battle. Standing on W. Confederate Ave from where Pickett's charge started from is surreal. Knowing those boys marched about 1 mile in an opened field directly into fire from the North is crazy to fathom. Great place to visit.

You don't know as much about this war as you claim. While Lee gave the general order, Longstreet is the man most responsible for the debacle. He waited so long into the artillery shelling to give Picket the order that there was no ammunition left to support a charge of that distance.
Longstreet did not like the plan from the moment Lee announced it and therefore hesitated.

All of this here is disproved by the correspondence by and between the principals both before and after the war.
Future president James Garfield for one, remarked on his own experience. He and many of the other northern soldiers didn't realize exactly what they were fighting for until they actually were on the ground in the south. He remarked on the horrible conditions many of the slaves lived in, and the effect the sight of so many of them lining the roads as the northern columns passed had on he and his brethren.
You mention New York City, yet you fail to mention the draft riots, where predominately Irish immigrants roamed the city beating and murdering blacks, who they were afraid were going to migrate to the city and compete with them for those jobs you talked about.

What they were willing to do to keep the jobs is irrelevant. If you didn't work you starved back then. The Irish knew it and the factory managers knew it as well. There's a reason why unions were so strong and needed in the North. People were literally being worked to death. And, as I said before, not just adults but children in crazy dangerous settings.
I typed what you quoted earlier not as a defense of Southern slavery, but as a counterpoint to the high morality so many try to clothe the Unionist cause in. It's ridiculous when you can pretty well say that the North had slaves in all but name until a much later date.

Look, nobody is trying to defend the institution of slavery. But that last little paragraph of yours goes to show that the northerners were also pretty damn racist in their own right.
And, I don’t know just exactly how bad it was for em in the south. Because blacks were seen as a commodity, for lack of a better term, to plantation owners. Absolutely fricking them up would’ve hurt their bottom line.
I’m not defending slavery, I never would and I think it was abhorrent that my ancestors practiced it. But I’m not going to be so damn quick to say that ALL slave owners treated their slaves like shite. Lee didn’t, Jackson definitely didn’t and neither did Jefferson Davis for that matter.
