When Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept, for there were no more worlds to conquer.

Benefits of a classical education.

He didn’t conqueror Athens. They kept changing sides repeatedly until they knew he would attack them. But they funneled money, soldiers, and resources to Persia like every other major Greek city state not named Corinth did

I mean, if everyone who did awful stuff within that time period, he just seemed much more randomly out for blood than anyone else. Sure, the other guys massacred plenty of people but he just seems to have enjoyed it more.

I read a biography about him and he came across really badly.

Like at one point, he’s just bored so he takes some men and says “we don’t have anything to do, we’re just going to kill everyone who lives up in those hills.

He was an immature man as well. He killed Black cletus by accident for crying out loud.

He didn’t lay siege to the city bc he didn’t have to. The Macedonians were the bosses of Greece after Chaeronea.

It’s impossible to really say how much he enjoyed killing in comparison to other conquerors. Also consider that we have more ancient sources on Alexander than we have most other conquerors. I guarantee Attila, Tiglath-Pilaser, Sargon, Nebuchadnezzar etc would demonstrate some pretty nasty character traits also if we knew them better.

Yeah I’m not really understanding how he can compare Alexander to the rest of the ancients. None of the others had as much written about them. I’m sure they were all very similar to each other.

Yeah, I was thinking in particular Greco-Roman Hellenistic world. I’m having a hard time describing it but he just seemed to random and arbitrary approach to life. He was the spoiled frat star who got everything he ever wanted and would throw a team trim when he didn’t. He’s infamous for moving around in his own tent for days at a time if he didn’t get his way.
