Youtube link of match

July 1, 1998 on "WCW Thunder", WCW Commissioner JJ Dillon announced that WCW World Heavyweight Champion "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan would defend his title against the undefeated WCW United States Champion and #1 contender, Goldberg on the July 6, 1998 edition of WCW Monday Nitro

That set off a frenzy of ticket sales that ensured the Georgia Dome, the host of Nitro on 7/6/98 would be sold out for the weekly show... as well as WWF Raw would have no chance of winning the ratings battle that week in the Monday Night Wars

obviously with it being the nWo... there would be road blocks as Goldberg was forced to do double duty that night... having to beat 1/2 of the Outsiders tag team, Scott Hall to start hour #3 of Nitro where if Goldberg lost, then the match against Hogan would be off.

the former Razor Ramon stood no chance... and the main event was confirmed

then came WCW's high point in the battle with WWF

the shocking thing I'm realizing... besides the fact that I'm now old... is that the referee of that match "Lil Naitch" Charles Robinson has been a referee in 1 of the big 2 companies (WCW or WWF/E) for 20+ years now

what a nice little career he's had

On this day, an actor followed a script. Great thread.

This should have been a PPV match.

But Bishoff was stuck on winning TV ratings.

Just imagine the amount of $$ WCW could have made from it.

The final sequence of Goldberg jackhammering and then pinning hogan is my favorite wrestling moment of all time.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a crowd in such a frenzy.

they recouped that. Can't underestimate how much having it on TV broadened the audience

Goldberg was boring IMO. Give me nWo all day long.

WCW was a lot of fun in the late 90's.

lost moment of that match...

the "Mailman" Karl Malone hitting a Diamond Cutter on Curt Hennig on the outside as Hogan's hitting his finishing legdrops on Goldberg

LA Tech finally doing something worthwhile

I about ran all over the couches! Love me some Goldberg. Still got cheated when he "lost." He was holding onto the damn ropes!!!!
