What type of routine do you do? I have recently started incorporating a lot more supersets and very short rest periods.

quote:truth. Big difference in a competitive triathlete who doesn't lift(even though most do) & the New Years resolution person who thinks just running on the tread will fix everything
. The very few fit people who only do cardio are doing it at a competitive level of intensity, HIITs or some combination.

Let's just say this... If you're doing any type cardio for weight loss without your diet being on point, you're wasting your time. If you're doing it to improve endurance at a particular thing or you just like it, then keep on.
As long as you understand this and proceed, you're good
Eta: and if your diet is on point, doing it for weight loss IS NOT NECESSARY

I'm 35 years old, usually hang around 10% bf & I've logged less than 10 miles on a treadmill in my entire life

Myself for instance. I am thin like a Kenyan. In the past, I have lifted my arse off for 3-4 years. I built no noticeable mass although I did get more definition. I did get stronger but for a 6' 135 lb (back then) guy, I wasn't going to do any real damage. I'm sure people will say I wasn't lifting the correct routine....maybe. But I was lifting with a friend who was a bigger body type and he made some noticeable gains in mass.

I run a few miles at a quick pace and mix that in with my lifting. I don't really have a set workout. I basically go until I can't go anymore and then call it a day

It is pretty easy for a triathlete to achieve an athletic build/physique with 80% of their training time dedicated to the three disciplines (swim, bike, run), about 10% to strength (MOSTLY core work, TRX etc) with very little/no lifting and about 10% dedicated to stretching, yoga, massage, etc.
No, the worlds best triathletes won't win a physique competition, but they don't look like the elite runners either.

Diet is to blame.

I have done the same. I will still have a "chest" day and a "back" day but they will be combined sometimes now. For example - Chest and Back
Superset 1- 3 total sets
Incline Dumbbell Press (Heavy) - Set of 8-10 reps
no rest
Bent Over Barbell Row (Heavy) - Set of 8-10 reps
no rest
Incline Dumbbell Press (Medium) - Set of 5-8 reps
no rest (except for unracking weight to make bar lighter than 1st set)
Bent Over Barbell Row (Medium) - Set of 5-8 reps
rest for 2 mins - set complete
Superset 2 - 3 total sets
Pushups - failure (usually about 35 at this point)
rest 30 secs
Wide Grip Pullups - failure
rest for 1 min - set complete

Similar to what I do. Saves a ton of time as well.
