The original Scafografs from the 1950's are coveted by diver junkies (especially the 300), Eberhard recently released their new version. You can find a used version of the newer model for around 2k

quote:Without getting into the fancy-pants talk about the accuracy of electrical currents oscillating through crystals, "quartz" basically refers to a watch being battery powered. Even some very high-end brands (like PP) have quartz models, but it's generally not considered desirable among enthusiasts.
Tell me more.
The Air King has a Sapphire crystal.
The "sapphire crystal" you're referring to is the material that the crystal (basically the "window" that protects the face of the watch) is made of. Most decent watches today have sapphire crystals with some notable exceptions for certain functions. Omega's iconic Speedy Pros (the real ones) use Hesalite to maintain their NASA certification. It doesn't shatter when broken. Now it's much easier to break (and scratch) than sapphire, but you can also pretty easily polish it. I use toothpaste to polish mine and it works like a charm.

I can do any modifications on anything you buy. You just gotta ask for help.

Sure they are. A true enthusiasts appreciates a watch for what it is and what it can do. None of us get real hung up on if a battery is the devil. And there are some really nice quartz watches. Really expensive too. For example Breitling makes a fabulous thermocompensated Superquartz which is COSC certified. It's a great movement.

Oh I don't. I just meant changing his straps for him.

Broke,
I love the Tudor Black Bay and am looking at hard myself, it just seems so big.
I have a 6 3/4" wrist and I think it wears larger.
The sub wears much better, currently wearing a Squale 1545 and love the size.
I just have a hard time paying $6k for a no date sub, so I' may look at Speedmaster.
ETA: The speedy is beautiful, not sure if I'd want a hand wind as my daily wear, can't decide.

Well for one thing they're not Quartz. Rolex has only made one Quartz watch and that was in the 1970s.
The Air King was updated in 2016 to look like this:

While you are in Switzerland researching watches I would look into Girard Perregaux. Two models you might be interested in based on your criteria:
Heritage Laureato
Classic Elegance Stainless Steel

A real baller would hire a hot German woman to follow him around and alerting him with a "cuckoo" followed by the time every hour.

Speedys are made with both manual and automatic movements. And different crystal configurations.

Speedy makes an auto. And I have the same size wrists and I wear a much larger watch. Rock it if you got it son.

The Speedy Auto's are huge, or they are the reduced...which are too small IMO.

That is a beautiful piece!
A bit out of my price range, though

With the exception of the Cartier, all of my watches are manual mechanical watches. Something about winding a watch everyday really gets me going in the morning.

IWC 8 day portuguese. probably have to find a used one to get in your budget, but well worth it.

it's 42mm. I think that's a fine size but that's what I normally wear.

IWC makes one of the best watches known to man. I'm a fan. I've always like their attention to detail and clean designs.

My SMP 300 doesn't (I guess no diving watch or watch with a sealing crown can).
On a Rolex you unscrew the crown to wind it then screw it back in to seal it. I dove to 25' one time with a Rolex with the crown screwed out and it didn't leak. Not recommended though especially on a Double Red Sea Dwellers. Those dials can get a little expensive.

They all look the same to me. The same badass watch.
Of course I like Rolex so I can't talk about watches that look the same. They hit all the check marks for a real "dress watch".
