Why vintage watch looks like modern?
This is "Marriage" type of watch - the most of this watches have antique mechanism and new watch case(or original, with solder lugs) for wearing on wrist.
Our workshop provides services for the manufacture of custom orders, you can order "marriage" watches based on the mechanisms of TOP brands , or customise offers you can see in our listings.
All the details in personal correspondence.

so I have no idea what I want. I'm in my 50's so more of a late-career daily wear watch.
Maybe a sorta dressy watch, "business casual" maybe. Would you prefer a strap or a metal bracelet looks-wise?

I'm thinking strap.
Digging in to it, self-winding would be a plus.

I wouldn’t buy an old watch like that. A manual winding watch from the 60’s might cost more than it’s worth at this price point. An old Seamaster…sure…a Stowa, na.

A Seiko Alpinist makes a very nice second watch if you re not hung up on the Swiss, great Explorer alternative that is its own thing.

What do you want your high-end watch to look like? Do you have anything in mind, other than it be expensive?
If you give us an idea of what you are looking for, then perhaps a budget find can be made.
I'll square with you though, this entire concept seems silly.

The replies have been huge helpful to narrow down some places and brands... looking at the ones mentioned, Seiko, Stowa, Hamilton, etc...

To be honest, under 2k doesn’t get you a high end watch. If you can bump it a bit to around 3.5 you can get a 1980s Rolex

$1000 watches aren’t high end or expensive…but they can get you style you’re looking for, if you’re attracted to something more heirloom or expensive. Look at enough nice ones and you can cobble together something in the $1000 range that gets you down that road. Here’s my daily wearer.
I save my nice strap for occasions and put it on a NATO. Just ordered a new one yesterday.

I would go find a jewelry store or department store that sells seikos. Try on a few and see what you like. I’ve had my samurai for a few years and it’s beat the frick up but I love it. Can be casual daily wear or easily dress up with a suit. I think they go for $500-600.

Have Hamilton, Tag, and Omegas...wear one of the Hamilton's most
You may want to look at vintage jewelrywatch shops as well. I've picked up an Oris, GP, and others for $200

Bought from them before. Returned to them before. Both were easy, quick, and pain-free

I sold an Oysterquartz for $3900 a few weeks ago. So 3.5 won't get you a Rolex

Tissot has some good stuff in this price range. Sure someone near you sells them.
