If you have to apply for an "award," it is not an award.

The pros outweigh the cons in my opinion. Where are the free trips to?

How would it help a teacher? Usually they are tied into a pay scale based on years of experience.

I guess it they wanted to move into administration possibly, but just to teach, I don't see how it helps

I was nominated once, then they told me I had to create a porfolio and was like "nah"
You have to get 3 recommendations, list all accomplishments, show student scores, write an essay on why you should be teacher of the year, etc..

If you have to apply for an "award," it is not an award.

In Louisiana, you are nominated by your fellow teachers at your school. Every school has a Teacher of the Year that fills out paperwork to be considered for Teacher of the Year for the District/Parish. If you are awarded that honor, you are expected to go through the process for State of Louisiana consideration.

This is something that is a pain in the but on the front end, but if you are a competitive person and take pride in the job you do, it is worthwhile to see where you might stack up against others in the profession. Plus, great networking opportunities with the best of the best.

If you are ok with a part of your 5 months of vacation being interrupted, then go for it

Also, you have to give up complaining about work on social media for a while....that eliminates most teachers

After I was selected as my school's teacher of the year a while ago, I told my administration that I wasn't doing anything to take me away from the classroom. They really pushed me hard on the parish level, but I was insistent. I have no desire to be an administrator. I don't like schmoozing with strangers. Outside of rooting for LSU football, I'm really not that competitive. I slapped together a portfolio in an afternoon just to get them off my back. Then I came in second and felt annoyed for five minutes. Lol!

A teacher who doesn't want homework? Go figure.

And considering it's generally among a bunch of women in government positions, the process is probably political on a comical level. Schools are not going to nominate teachers with the most merit.
