I don't think it should be done at any level. I know it's called "Grade Recovery" though, get it right.

If it's a college class hell yeah I would be pissed if someone got a retake for no reason and I don't have the option.

I thought he didn't have an option as well. And then he posted this:

quote:

Retake is optional
Student B declines retake
No error. Just bad grades.

Sometimes a teacher, especially if they give a test that's different than ones they've previously given over certain content, will offer a retake if everyone scored well below what they expected. That's understandable and it happens.

I'd rather have a teacher like that instead of one that gives you a shitty test that doesn't touch on shite that was covered in the course or text.

If everyone in the class was offered the retake and the OP didn't capitalize that's on him IMO. There's a big difference in one person being offered to offset their shitty grade and the whole class being offered because the teacher can acknowledge their frick up.

There's a misunderstanding with the premise

Student A makes 40 on OCHEM Test 1. Teacher offered retake. Student makes 90 on the Test I retake. Student A then makes 90 on test 2.

Student B makes 90 on Ochem test 1. He declines the retake option offered to everyone because he made a 90. Student B then makes a 40 on Ochem Test 2. No retake offered. He's stuck with 90 and 40, while Student A has a 90 and a 90.

I say student B should be rightfully pissed.

they handful of times re-takes were offered in HS, there was a max grade they could get on the retake. It was usually 70% or so.

Treat every test like there won't be a retake? I fail to see where your score on the second test has anything to do with the retake on the first that you personally refused to take.

I missed a 3000 level Geography Statistics because my girl was in rehab.

We had some great times.

The Prof let me retake the exam. It helped that the Prof and myself partied hard. Great guy.

Every Summer we went to Big Bend and took and sniffed everything possible. He was studying Flora there and wrote 4 papers that were published.

Show me tests where grade fluctuate as much as 50 points between two tests and I'll show you a shitty teacher

NVM, you're just dumb and probably didn't study correctly for test 2 if student A managed to get a 90 on it.

There are so many college graduates, me included, who are pursuing careers that have no connection to what their major was. What's the point of forcing a curve so students can pass and get a degree that likely will have no correlation to their career?

If they're that serious about a specific career path, they'll pass without a curve.

If your were accused of a crime you were innocent of would you feel as safe with someone who passed with flying colors on his/her 5th try or someone who barely passed on their first try and had a poor gpa?

I'm a HS teacher. We offer retakes to students that failed, but they can only max out at a 70. Before they take the retest they have to come do an extra assignment after school.

I think it's a good policy. The only thing I would add is that retests should be at teacher disgression instead of for everyone. The kids that are little shits and do no class work or HW shouldn't get the opportunity to pay attention for that 1 after school session and pass the retest and class. They should at least had to be trying.

Honor code college.

Frat boys steal exam. Drunk frat boy brags in bar about his A.

All that is reported to head of dept.

Prof gives new test to all students with no warning on day they were to receive results of test 1.
