I'm guessing you would want to plant large things that grow easily - winter squash, pumpkins, acorn squash (these all store well in cool weather + have tons of carbs). Okra produces a LOT of food for a long period of time. Peas/beans are easy to grow. I'd stay away from corn completely at first. Way too many pests.
If you want some of the best gardening knowledge check out 'bayou gardener' website. It's run by a Louisiana guy named Don. Best site for real world, no-hype, no-nonsense gardening. Lots of preppers post on there.
Also from that survival garden website I checked out (posted link earlier), an emphasis (somewhat) on perennials as easier once established. What about carrots and onions?

carrots are easy to grow if you have very good soil (loose with lots of organic material)
onions are very easy to grow. just hit them with some nitrogen-heavy fertilizer every 3 weeks and keep watered well. over here, they'll be ready to pick around July

Don't forget to get some cows. Can't live without that medium rare ribeye

Here is one of the threads I was reading on EMPs and modern vehicles
BOOM. Great info and actually something I've been wondering/worried about.

Yea, I was happy I stumbled upon that thread. If my car was rendered useless, I'd be in trouble. My plan is to load up the guns, ammo, and supplies in the car and drive 40 minutes north to the property. I'd be stuck in Mandeville if an EMP could shut down cars

There is enough game and fish to not worry any damn rats or snakes. This could really turn into a good story.
Actually, I'm a writer. Last night I started brainstorming a plot based around this scenario.
A message board format is the perfect place to bounce creative ideas off multiple people. Think about it...we just created a story from nowhere in less than 2 days.
On top of that, the thread was started by the universally loathed and frequently banished mizzoukills.
Ahhhh...the wonders of the internets.

For people who plan to drive further to a designated "survival zone", what happens if the EMP/catastrophe occurs when your car is out of fuel? Do you plan to rob for gas, or attempt to steal gas from another car in the middle of the night? Both choices may get you killed in that event.
What is your fuel plan?

All OTers have 3 full gas cans, with stabil and/or rotated out.

Fortifying in an area while hoarding goods and guns sounds good, it would also attract a lot of attention. a place like that would be very vulnerable to be armored vehicles. Having a small footprint, being able to live off of the land, being mobile would be the key to long term survival if society breaks down and people are in kill or be kill mode.

I always keep at least 20 gallons of gas in my garage; I fill up 6 5gallon cans in June with Stabil for hurricane season. At the end of October, I fill the cars with those, refill 4 or 5 of the 5 gallon cans with stabil for the winter time. I'm set when it comes to having enough gas to get to the property.

Having a small footprint
Totally agree

being mobile
Somewhat agree...but at the same time, being mobile could get you killed as easily as fortifying in one location.
What happens if you are mobile and come across a roving band of killers? What happens if you stumble onto someone's property and they shoot you for trespassing?
Also, going mobile means you lose contact with neighbors that you've forged years of trust.

Perhaps you are prepared for a drive to property 40 miles away. You have a good plan.
What about people who need to "bug out" to property that is hours or a couple hundred miles away?
Most of us don't yet have sufficient survival property within an hour of our current location.

You are correct; most people have their "bugout" locations a couple hours drive from where they are located. Those people need to be a little more aware of their fuel situation and have a legitimate plan.

My wife and I have recently started looking for property 15 - 20 miles outside the city.
At the moment, our long term bugout plan is to go to the family farm about 5 hours away. The farm is 1,500 acres split between timber and crop land.
We would need to leave within the first 48 hours to avoid the panic that will hit the population within the first week following the catastrophe.
My goal would be to get her and the children up there to safety as soon as possible, and then make one or two trips alone back to our house in SW Missouri to retrieve the rest of our supplies.
I need fuel for that plan...and right now i don't have suffienct fuel.

Serious and perhaps impossible question:
What is your plan if you, your wife, and children are surrounded by a roving band of maruaders who far outnumber you. The likelihood is that they will kill, probably rape your wife and enslave her, and who knows what they'll do to your children.
What do you do at that moment?
Side note: You do have a gun.

My wife and I have not discussed this since we've had kids. Previously it was go down fighting, blaze of glory type stuff. With kids it's different, I imagine there are levels of existence deep inside people that would enable them to withstand horrible things to allow their children to survive.
Unfortunately, I imagine some people would act out the final scene of the movie "The Mist".
Which would be tragic.

First off if they are just on foot I'm plowing through. If vehicles are blocking the road I engage my roof mounted flame thrower as I slam it in reverse.
