I have a few of the mountain house pails mainly for hurricane season. I was always curious if they lasted as long as they said they did

The pouches have a shorter shelf life, up to ten years, I think. Their #10 cans are supposed to go for twenty.

Well, good news is that during flood or rising water, animals seek higher ground. Therefore, we'll have our picking of rodents and snakes which we can obviously kill to feed the clan.
There is enough game and fish to not worry any damn rats or snakes.
This could really turn into a good story.

You don't need the entire grid. You can homebrew your own smaller grid for a small city and such. You just won't have the vast web we currently have now in the event of something major. You wouldn't have every house lit up, you would restore the hospital and government buildings and work outwards.
This isn't the television show Revolution. An EMP won't turn off everything for good or even damage everything. A lot of shite will survive just fine just due to the level of shielding we currently have, even at worst case scenario.

Somebody should right a book. Don't leave my awesome character out.

One Second After is an ok book about an EMP event from the prespective of college professor/veteran in a suburb of Asheville. It talks about how people spread out from cities and then a cannibal band attacks the community.

I read that book. Was really my first experience with any kind of post apocalyptic novel. Freaked me the frick out and made me want to be a full on pepper for a few weeks. Then I came to my senses.

Not much of one, but I live in the country and we have a stocked pond full of fish, (200 yd driveway on a hill) guns & plenty ammo with green light on hog rifle. Plenty of camping supplies, fire starters. I made a rocket stove, which is really cool for cooking, (plenty of fuel). I would need gas for the generator, (which I don't have). I would be good for a week or so, but not too much longer. I probably need to stock up on more food and medical supplies.

My house will run off grid. (solar/generator) I have land, a tractor, diesel and a water well. Nothing crazy on the food supply, maybe a couple of weeks.
I built it that way after Katrina.

In an EMP, electronic devices would be fried, either on or off the grid. An interesting side bit, old school cars that don't rely on electronics (you know, has points, etc) would be safe from such attack.

Guns, water, and not being the slowest runner.

quote:"Lights Out" is a pretty good one, I believe amateur written but you wouldn't really notice. I don't even know if it's published but copies are easy to find on the net. It covers the details well, esp. defense, marauders and the psychological aspects.
