OT Science Baws - Why is Alchemy No Longer Taught?

Seems like a lot of really smart people from years ago had a solid foundation in Alchemy. Jack Parsons was one that credited his mastery of rocket propulsion to learning alchemy. Aleister Crowley is another and credited his mastery of Black Magic not to chemistry, but to alchemy.
I went on a tour of NASA in Clear Lake and they flat out said alchemy techniques are still used when experimenting with particles at a much higher elevation like the Int'l Space Station.

Black Magic
We don't call it that anymore.

We don't need any more micro-breweries and fruity beer.

Once they figured out how to turn lead into gold, they shut down.

Alchemy is still taught, it's just called chemistry now.
Witch hunts and inquisitions still persist though, so you're halfway there.

What else am I supposed to drink while throwing axes?

Because chemistry produces better and real results.

I always thought alchemy was fake science from centuries ago that tried just that… turning various metals into gold, or some other wizardry that didn’t work.

These days it's called "crypto", in which conjurers magically turn perfectly good electricity into "currency".

Maybe the fiat currency guys are former alchemy guys. They grew frustrated that they couldn't turn other base metals into gold so they invented fiat currency. Now they just enter zeros in a computer and voila', digital gold.

Did they mention what type of particles?

Of course not. They said it's classified. I inferred that to mean weaponry advantages, biological warfare advantages etc. Essentially they said specialized steel can be made at 275 miles above earth's atmosphere, but that's as much info as I got out of the $10/hr tour guide.

What's the difference between Alchemy and Chemistry?
I'll hang up and listen...

Ummm, I thought I covered that in my OP. Google Aleister Crowley Alchemy for one. Or Jack Parsons Alchemy. Or don't.

Might as well quote the google definitions for this.
Alchemy:
quote:
the medieval forerunner of chemistry, based on the supposed transformation of matter. It was concerned particularly with attempts to convert base metals into gold or to find a universal elixir.
Chemistry:
quote:
the branch of science that deals with the identification of the substances of which matter is composed; the investigation of their properties and the ways in which they interact, combine, and change; and the use of these processes to form new substances.

I get the impression that your NASA tour guide said alchemy because the scientist conducting experiments in the Space Station called it alchemy. They probably called it alchemy in jest and at the same time being semi-serious. They are conducting experiments in a new environment (no gravity...or very little). Under these new and unknown conditions you can't assume the reaction will happen the same as on earth. Some of these experiments probably make them nervous without gravity to assist in containing the experiments. So they jokingly call it alchemy.

alchemy was well supported with chemistry sets for students in the 60's, but that all went the way of fat sam when the govt got involved in hazard mitigation. We did some pretty cool stuff with strong reagents
