I changed out my trim on my shower and can’t get the handle to get tight. I screw the set screw as tight as I can but the handle still seems loose. It isn’t loose enough to be able to pull it off but it wobbles. Is there a trick that I am missing? Thanks.

It sounds like your pinion valve is loose. Tear out the tile and you should see it sitting there right behind your shower valve.

On the valbe stem shaft where the set screw contacts it, there maybe a flat spot on the shaft. Try to loosen the set screw and rotate the handle and retighten.

Of that does not work then the hole in the trim piece might be too large for the valve stem

American standard. Single handle. I thought there may be some build up so I ordered a second set but I get the same results.

No washer.

No flat spot as the piece it contacts is free to move, if that makes sense.

Sorry about your small valve stem.

Is the handle/trim actually for the American Standard valve in the wall, or is it some kind of universal kit?

Do you know for a fact that the trim is correct for the valve you have? American Standard has made a lot of shower valves. If the trim is for a different model, the handle may not be made to fit.

I'm not the best with AS, but have sold plumbing for about 25 years. Often, there is a plastic adapter that fits on the spindle, but if you are tightening the set screw and it won't come off, this probably isnt the case. Makes me think your handle wasn't made for the particular spindle/stem you have in the wall.

The paperwork shows the same valve settings as the one I have if that makes sense.

If you are willing to shoot me an email I can take pics and send them.

Thanks.

It seems to me that my parent's house had that type of American standard fixture and there was a little square plastic insert that went into the handle before you slipped it over the square control shaft of the faucet.

are you sure you have not left out something like the insert?
