OT plumbers and tool belt heroes (DIY guys). Water Hammer?

Obviously by using the term water hammer, I've googled. Our house was built in 83-84. So I do not know what code was back then for having "air chambers" installed. I just know my problem.
We got a new washing machine and ever since minor pipe knocking in cold weather has become an every wash occurrence. The pipes now bang when the washer start or stops drawing water. Is there an easy fix? I may have to call a plumber anyway as the water valve to the washer is old, chewed up and frozen. I assume it will need to be "sweated" off to add anything.
Any day now I just expect to hear water pouring down the walls. And of course mine is a 2-story construction with the water heater in the attic. So damage would be a maximum if a pipe were to burst.

Jimmy Hoffa died in 1982. Maybe have someone scan your walls and floors for a body.

Not a plumber, but had this issue in the past. Water Hammer symptoms can also come from a loose flat washer in the valve seat - and that is the most likely cause, IMO.

Lowes sells an 'arrestor' for about 20 bucks. I'd try that first.

Shut off the water at the main or emergency shuttoff. Open the highest tap. Open the lowest tap. Let the pipes drain. When the water stops flowing from the lowest tap turn it off. Open the main. You should be good.

I see solder and new fittings in that pic. I'd need a plumber. Plus my old valves look every bit 35 years old. Trying to get them off myself has a high pucker factor.

No, no, no. You can screw it on to the valve and then screw the hose into the arrester.
Look at this one: LINK

The arrester is the entire piece inside the red box. It goes between the water valve and the water hose (yellow arrows where it screws on).

This. Got to let the air out of the pipes

Actually the opposite, air chambers will get "water logged" over time and lose their "cushion". By draining your water supply you enable air to refill the air chambers.
In many cases this will work.

here's a vid on your exact problem and solution. It's basically what everyone else here is suggesting to fix the problem. Look like an easy DIY
