Family friend has one. Former military pilot, extremely competent. I'm riding with him one time, sitting in the copilot seat. I look over at him and he's slumped over the controls.

It turned out he was looking at a chart spread at his feet but it was a moment of sheer unadulterated terror.

Nice. I love those planes, and was in a USN squadron (maintenance department) for nine years (C-130T).

Hey frick you I’m taking vacation, but even when I’m at work I don’t frick around on TD the whole day. Sometimes I fly airplanes and sometimes I eat jalapeño popcorn and stand around and bullshite. Now I’m logging an hour of credit for talking about all this work.

The weird thing is that I'm not afraid of the heights or the flying it's just the thoughts of leaving behind a family if something were to ever happen. My baby boy is the best and he needs a daddy.

Is that normal or my judgment kicking in? Not sure if other pilots experience those same emotions.

How much does it cost to get into flying fixed-wing aircraft? I wanted to go to school to fly helicopters and it was like $200k.

Family certainly changes your perspective. I work in aviation, and personally feel it’s extremely safe IF you know your limitations and the limitations of your equipment. I’d say learn what your comfort level is with things like weather, cross wind landings, fuel planning etc, then raise your personal minimums even higher, especially as your just starting out.

Do good preflights, don’t take short cuts on simple things like checklists even if you’ve done them 100 times, and always practice for the unexpected. During VFR flying, my instructor taught me to always be thinking about what I’d do in case of an emergency like an engine failure, and we’d practice by pointing out roads or fields that we’d aim for. Every now and then, he’d reach over at random times and pull the throttle to idle, and I’d have to set up for an off-airport landing somewhere.

You can’t eliminate risk, but you can mitigate it. For example, maybe don’t fly at night over mountains in a single piston (unless you have confidence in the equipment) Train and prepare well, and don’t get complacent. And get connected with the pilot community around you - you’ll find that most are more than happy to pass along the wisdom they’ve accumulated

You can get a fixed wing license for much cheaper than those helicopter schools (most of which went out of business) AOPA has a lot of great resources and explains the different type of licenses and typical costs.

While not a pilot myself (on my bucket list), my grandfather was for the majority of his life. He flew crop dusters into his 60s, and continued flying recreationally until he passed away in his 80s. As long as you dont take unnecessary risks, all signs point to you being just fine
