Friend of mine from back in HS. Lt. Col., former 403rd Ops Group deputy commander and the Hurricane Hunters Director of Operations. KG completed his final flight June 4, 2019 at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss. His “fini flight” was with the 815th Airlift Squadron aka “Flying Jennies.” 29 yrs of service with the USAF ... So proud of that dude. Some here likely know KG, as he may even post here for all I know.

It's fast. Trues out at 300+ IIRC.

Damn impressive for a garage built airplane.

The more interesting question is whether on not the 350-900 can make the return without a fuel stop. Joburg is a mile high and talking to my 777 friends even the LR had trouble getting underweight for the return trip.

Maybe possible from JFK.

You're talking west to east. Heycap is talking east to west. Whole different ballgame in the wind department.

And as he mentioned the problem is compounded by the fact that Johannesburg is at 5k+ feet. It gets hot there to boot. All that to say, if you're full of pax and cargo, you can only hold so much gas while bucking a headwind headed west. I've never flown a leg like that, but I can imagine fuel is a commodity.

HeyCap mentioned the 777LR having issues and I have to believe the A350 would really struggle as few airframes can compare to the triple in that regime.

It's a haul:

Edit: all that to say that it sounds like a good problem for a dispatcher.

You can always divert to Ascension or St. Helena

I hear the winds there are brutal.

I've only ever piloted aircraft as a civilian but have been lucky enough to meet and get to know several owners of old warbirds from attending various flight shows when I was younger. Favorite to fly at my age now is a simple Cessna 152. Yeah, it's like the Toyota Corolla of aircraft, but it's fun and relaxing for just tooling around locally.
Most exciting time behind the stick has been in the P-40N. Definitely the most powerful I've ever logged hours in (only collected 42 hours in it due to availability and fuel expense).
Tail draggers are "lots of fun" on the ground, and the torque on that take off roll would force you to kick right rudder HARD and nearly stand on it until airborne. Wish I'd been good enough to try out some aerobatics in it, but alas, nearly all the time collected was straight and level and a bunch of touch-and-goes.

Has anyone here logged any hours in a P-51? I'd love to hear how that one handles.

To all you who flew as military pilots, thanks for your service.

I know a guy that flies that route for delta. He has told me some pretty evil stories about the thunderstorms around the equator.

UPT in 80’s, only made it to final contact check in Tweets, but man that little tadpole was fun. Still know the spin boldface by heart.

It wasn’t BOLDFACE when I went thru, but I remember-
IDLE
NEUTRAL
AFT
SPINNING LEFT (or right)
NEEDLE LEFT (or right)
FULL OPPOSITE RUDDER
one full spin
& BOOM- stick full forward

I’d pay $1k for an hour in the pattern in a T-37.

Yes, winds are considered going east to west and I doubt the A359 could pull it off without major restrictions, but JHB-JFK is shorter than JHB-ATL by roughly an hour.

It’s obvious you’ve never flown on one, there’s nothing comfy about the BUFF.
